Does anyone have a good electronics installer in the Brick N J area that they would recommend ?

Painful, right? I am near you and had an electronics upgrade in the works. I met (2) potential installers at the last AC boat show. Neither followed through or returned my calls. I called a third through a google search and left a message that was also not returned. 3 stikes. I am a handy guy so I read up and reached out to Ray marine support. Really turned out to be much easier than expected. I did post the project with some pics (before/after) also my avatar shows a quick pic.
Feel free to pm me for any further details ...

Was one of the installers Octopus marine?

Not to steel your thread but some one person companies will not say no to work. When dealing with them I always ask how much work they presently have. Some are very honest and tell you (The good ones will offer to schedule in even if it is 6 months out) and other say I can fit you in (These are the people to avoid).

You want painful? Try living away from the ocean coasts in the Midwest. The one guy I found I think really understands the installation side, but is impossible to deal with. I work in IT and run into my share of IT people with poor people skills, but this guy is worse than many.

Wow, hits close to home for me - I am in KY and boat on the Ohio River. We have a fairly large boating community but really no one that accomplish major upgrades or even smaller ones. My '05 420 is in need of updating and I am struggling with a competent installer - considering flying someone in, which might be my only hope.

I feel like the local yard, which is competent in most general marine work, could do the actual installation without a problem.

The larger challenge for me is picking the specific equipment for my boat, made slightly more complex by the desire/need to also replace my existing older SystemView SC5000 which is tied into the NorthStar 6000i. I don't get any depth sensing without the NorthStar powered up, so when that dies so does any depth sensing which I consider a necessity.

I have zero confidence that my yard can aid in this selection. My other retail choices are West Marine and "outdoors" vendors way more oriented to fsh finders and bass boats.

At the end of the day, I boat on a large inland lake but really it's not that large that I'm depending on mapping to get home. My hard need is really for depth sounding, but I'd also like basic sonar display, charting and some way to display SmartCraft data on an MFD.

The latter part is complicated because there's about 3 basic ways to do this from what I can tell -- SmartCraft NMEA2000 gateway, SmartCraft VesselView Link (basically a headless VesselView that allows Simrad displays to work as a Vessel View display over NMEA2000), or just buy a complete new VesselView display.
