Hi,

Have tried searching but haven't found the answer. Considering moving from the 48DA to a 500 or 52DB as it probably suits how we boat better now. Is there much involved in lifting the lounges & saloon floor for good access to the engines? Access to the outside of the engines looks like it would be very difficult without lifting the floor.

Thanks,
Paul

I think there is great engine access from the lazzerette / engine room access hatch in the cockpit.
To remove the engine access hatch in the solon would be something I couldn't even get my head around. Looks like all of the furniture and cabinets would have to be removed then the carpet ripped up and probably the sliding door removed so the hatch could be taken out....

If your talking about routinely accessing the engines from the salon, yes it would be very involved. Just removing the sealant is probably a project in itself. Access is from the cockpit hatch only and is adequate for most maintenance procedures.

Thanks for the replies. In that case, it looks like the salt water service will be a painful job. One of the boats I'm looking at has MANs so aftercoolers and heat exchangers are to be serviced every 2 years.

Thanks,
Paul

Really the only problem is the port motor impeller. I’m not going to say I was comfortable but it’s doable and usually every other year.
Other that that oil and filters are easily accessible. (On Qsm11) I know nothing about the MAN set up. Keep us posted and good luck

I have to say I am biased on the Manns as I’ve seen some pretty expensive repair bills on a 58DB I was getting ready to buy. My first concern would be, do you have really good Mann mechanical service people within your normal travel or service area? If you do and you get really good feedback from the boats service history records an extremely quailified Mann Engine survey on the engines and you have great Mann servicing available, go for it. If any of the above is not a solid check mark, walk away imho.

QSM11s have their know issues as well but have a lot more serviceable people and parts availability in the US to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks for the replies. I've had experience with MANs before and do have an authorised service centre about an hour away. I agree the QSMs would be preferred so I might just wait for the right one to come up if the deal on the MANs boat isn't worthwhile.

I have a 52SB with QSM11s, and I have a 2 minute video walkthrough of the engine room. private message me and I can send it to you.
