340 SUNDANCER THREAD

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the intrusion, I hadn't been on the site in quite a while and had misplaced my links.

no intrusion at all.....hope you figure things out....

Hi everybody, I am looking for some help, I have a 2005 340 [375 here in Aus] with twin 320s FWC on shafts and have an electrical problem which has me stumped.
When starboard batteries are energized very little works, no ignition, no instrumentation, even battery check gauge in panel shows nil reading even though batteries are fully charged and engine hatch lift works fine but only when starboard battery switch is energized which is how it should be.
Port side is fine, engine starts and runs just no instrumentation which I know is run from the starboard batteries.
My best guess is the ign switches are the problem but the fact that nil voltage is indicated in the check gauge has me a bit confused.
Any help would be greatly appreciated so thanks in advance.

I had the 90 amp fuse on my starter fail, and had a very similar problem. I replaced the fuse, and the engine started... I also replaced my alternator, which was the likely source of the fuse failure...

Thanks for the suggestion, I am prepared to investigate everything and yes I have had an alternator problem on that engine. How and where do I identify the 90 amp fuse ???

Thanks for your help the info was invaluable, found the fuse, ran the multi-meter over it and it appears to be the offending part so have a new one on order, I will continue investigation towards the alternator to discover the cause.
Was lucky I posted on this site by mistake as have had no replies on the site suggested above.

Probably a bit of a long shot, but does anyone have experience removing the westerbeke generator from a boat with 8.1s engines? There is one we're interested in that the generator is currently non-functional (and has been that way since 2012 or earlier) so I have to assume it's dead. Our offer would include the cost of a new genny and some labor, but I'm wondering if the starboard motor need to come out? At first glance it looks like pulling the exhaust would free up nearly enough, but it'll be close.

might send a PM (conversation request) to Dale (aka MasterFab)....I bet he ran into that when he was restoring his 2002 340......

My two cents - pass on this boat. Pass passionately and quickly. A 2002 340 in otherwise Bristol condition would need to be something in the $30k range to offset the cost of a new generator and the labor to replace it. I bet you're $20k into a gen set replacement with a new Westerbeke. I'm 83% sure the starboard engine will have to come out based on the time I've spent screwing around in my engine room. With a boat of this vintage once that motor comes out who knows what else they find...

My two cents only of course.

Yeah, You're probably right. More and more 340s of this vintage are starting to show up online that don't have those issues so it's probably worth continuing our search. We just don't get too many showing up within an hour of where we are so when one does it's easy to get excited

I just had to remove the starboard riser and exhaust tube to pull mine... I used a jet ski lift in pulled it in the water...

To follow up, Dale got back to me and said the starboard exhaust comes off and does leave enough room to get the westerbeke out.

Well heck. I stand corrected. Good stuff!

Yeah, but your point about the boat overall is well received. It's not pristine aside from the genny by any means, I'm going to wait for a better one. Going to check out another CSR members 02 340 this Sunday afternoon.

It may just be me but, Since I've owned this vessel,(2002 340da) the fresh water tank level indicator always shows FULL, (all lights on!), when I depress the button.
The Holding tank shows level indication whenever the head system switch is on. Empty/Half/Full, Do not Flush!
So It seems I need to investigate/repair the fresh water level indictor. (wherever it is)
But, I find it really strange that recently, the day the holding tank showed, "Full", the fresh water was completely empty, almost simultaneously.
Could some wires be crossed?
Thanks,
Jim Crews

Pumped out the holding tank today. That level sensor works like is supposed to. And, yes, I was out of fresh water. (Good tank size calculations Sea Ray!) Now, How do I repair the fresh water level sensor? Is the first place to start at the actual display behind the electrical panel, or is the likely culprit in the tank?

The level sensor for the fresh water tank on the '02 340 is fairly easy to access. Remove the transverse cushions in the mid stateroom, as the tank is located right underneath this area. If I recall correctly, there is a plywood cover that has to be removed next, exposing the tank. The level sensor probes are located on the starboard side of the tank, right on top. Check for any bad connections or loose wires here. The probes are simply stainless steel rods of varying lengths - no moving parts. About the only thing that can go wrong with them is a biofilm or sludge that is providing a conductive path between them, so you might wind up needing a thorough tank cleaning. I pulled mine right out, made up a bleach solution, and sloshed it around inside the tank for a few days, then rinsed it thoroughly before I reinstalled it.

Dug it all out today. The culprit seems to be the master circuit board, but until I can confirm a few things with the mfg., won't know for sure.
