Hey Guys,

Looking to try and get so information about the slip fees and also anything about winterizing in marinas off of the Potomac River. Can anyone help me out? Whats the typical cost per foot, and do you have to pull your boats? Are there typically waiting lists for slips? Thanks in advance, Don

Hi dcpringle, We have used Coltons Point Marina which right off St Clements Island. They do excellent work, reasonable prices, allow do it yourselfers - only ask that you purchase supplies from their ships store, which is comparable to West Marine or better. Don't know much about any other marinas. I have used them twice and were quite impressed.

What part of the river would you like information on?

For the northern portion of the Potomac..... Columbia Island, Gangplank have 2-3 year wait lists. James Creek may have slips but I do not know that for a fact.

National Harbor may also have slips for next year but they are usually the most expensive.

In regards to how expensive the slips will be in 2018 is still up in the air for all the marinas mentioned.

For pulling your boat for the winter.....I go to the Fort Washington Marina. Others go to Occoquan. Those marina's are the only ones with travel lifts on the northern part of the river.

Your best bet for accurate pricing is to give them a call.

My boat came from National Harbor and always wintered in the water, mostly just with heaters. The PO moved it to Occoquan Harbor Marina for the surveys and haul out. From our few trips there, I'd say it's a nice little marina with helpful staff but their travel lift was straining with the 480DB! Sorry I can't be any help on pricing.

Thanks guys... So part of the reasons for my questions was wrapped around potentially purchasing a marina in the area. I'm wondering how profitable or if it would be profitable. Thinking now might be the time to swap into doing something different... Thoughts?

I have looked at that several times but the aforementioned marinas north of the Woodrow Wilson bridge sit on US Parklands. As a result, owning one has never been a successful business model.

Even the Maryland Department of Natural Resources couldn't make Fort Washington Marina work. After a couple of high profile murders on the property....the US Park Service took it back and is trying to run it. Coastal Properties is the management company.

I looked at a few on the Chesapeake but the story was always the same about the condition of the docks, repair facilities and the customer base. In order to make it work required a huge capital investment which Coastal told me to consider it as "patience" money. They define patience money as: you have to wait a very long time to make it back.

We have had a decline in boating (boats over 25') for the last 8 years or so on the Potomac. The only reason that there is a waiting list at some of the marinas is a direct result of the Wharf development in DC which has displaced almost 250 boats. Those slips won't come back until 2019.
