Official 2003.5-2008 340 Sundancer Thread

Hi everybody, I am looking for some help, I have a 2005 340 [375 here in Aus] with twin 320s FWC on shafts and have an electrical problem which has me stumped.
When starboard batteries are energized very little works, no ignition, no instrumentation, even battery check gauge in panel shows nil reading even though batteries are fully charged and engine hatch lift works fine but only when starboard battery switch is energized which is how it should be.
Port side is fine, engine starts and runs just no instrumentation which I know is run from the starboard batteries.
My best guess is the ign switches are the problem but the fact that nil voltage is indicated in the check gauge has me a bit confused.
Any help would be greatly appreciated so thanks in advance.

I had a spongy deck forward of starboard " skylight". After some exploratory surgery I found the balsa wood core to be saturated with water. The leak was from the second from windshield grab rail mount. Poor caulking job (little bit of caulk under grab rail on top of deck, and a slug of caulk applied on top of a flat washer and nylock nut underneath ) After recaulking the mounts, I used a combination of 3/4" plywood, epoxy, and expanding foam to remedy the problem. Anyway, I fixed it in about 20 hrs, +/- $200.00.

Wow...that’s some surgery. I take it that’s the grab rail along the sides of the sun pad option. I thought SR used a synthetic type plywood on these boats. Maybe the later years?

Yup, on the sides of the sun pad. The first bolt / stud ( closest to windshield ) is a couple inches long and can be seen by removing skylight bezel. The rest are about a inch long and go though top deck skin only. I pulled about 4 sq/ft of (soaking wet) end grain balsa out. Truly surprised how poor of a caulk job SR did.

I want to replace my Raymarine C80 with another unit. It has crapped out. The boat is for sale so I'm looking for a plug and play option that can use existing wiring and electric connections without changing out radar. Does anyone know of such replacement?

I've got a spare c80 from my last boat. I don't need it...

rmlsll, how does the cabin headliner come off? I've been removing the deck hardware, overdrilling, filling with epoxy and re-installing - the sun pad rails were next on my list.

Remove the fillers between the cabinets, curtain track, track backer above it, and the light housings (I only had to do the starboard one and there are screws buried behind the foam ) I used a oscillating saw and slowly dropped the headliner working towards the hatch (just like skinning a deer) Look for silicone plug in fiberglass, thats the studs. 3M trim adhesive to put it back up.

Oh ya, I never got to the last stud towards the bow. Might have to remove the side storage compartments and the hatch to get enough of the headliner down to get to them. Big job, good luck !!!

Hello All...New to me 2006 340. Still has the original C80 with Radar and Autopilot. Fishfinder and therefore depthfider inop and GPS inop (does not find any satellites). Radar works. Hard to believe both would not work, so I am hoping just a pulled plug somewhere. Does anyone know the path? any ideas or shortcuts or things to check?

Thanks!

I had the same issue. Trouble shooting with Raymarine, they determined it was the hub that everything communicates through. Then certain cables. It was a nightmare trying to get it right. Seemed like every time I got one thing communicating, the other didn't. Became unreliable, so ended up replacing with Garmin 7610 and 18" xHD Radar. Very pleased. My autopilot, VHF and Smartcraft communicate with it and it is soooo user friendly. I was planning on upgrading eventually when we purchased 2 seasons ago, just this soon. Pricey but sweet. Does exactly what it is supposed to with no issues and only a fraction of the connections.

I just closed today on a 400 Sedan Bridge so I will be selling the 340. Thanks to everyone for the help and guidance over the last two years. My boat is definitely much improved because of the information found in this thread.

Besides using a magnet to test manifolds is there a way to know whether I have Aluminum or steel? I believe there steel but just curious since I am not nearby to look at.

Mark - I may not be good at C80's vs RL80's, but I recall by 2006 Mercruiser had gone back to cast iron. My '05 340 was an early '05 and it originally had aluminum...

Looking to do the same project, can you give me a round about budget?
