Are You A Boater?

I am a boater. Our boat is exactly one hour from home on the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Our boat is our vacation home. We enjoy our boat, our marina, boat friends, destinations and journeys about 3 out of 4 weekends year round. Every Friday afternoon, I still get excited like a little kid as we pull into the parking lot of our marina.

We also enjoy the holiday weekends. We anchor out or raft up in a safe location and watch the Yahoo!'s all weekend. For real entertainment, we will dinghy to the nearest launch ramp for the late afternoon show!

Thanks for the confession. Where do you keep your boat? I was at Oxbow Marina for almost 10 years before the move to Louisiana. I lived in Elk Grove but the office was in Bishop Ranch.

NorCal Boater - we are at Oxbow. D Shed. Love it. Considering a move to Willowberm, but on the fence.

When we had the 340da we were in D-16. Then we bought a 1984 52' KhaShing (Taiwanese) Cockpit Moor Yacht. It was too tall for any of the sheds so they put us permanently on the Guest Dock. We were in the first slip on the right as you walked out to the fuel dock. We had a lot of fun and made many friends there. How long have you been there?

We looked a Willow Berm a couple of times. The prices were higher and boaters and management seemed a bit snootier. Then we just got to know everyone so well at Oxbow we just decided to stay put. Some don't like that 30 minute ride up or down Georgianna Slough but for us, as we were going out we kind of used the time to get stuff squared away and coming back it allowed the engines to cool down slowly and gave my wife time to start getting things stowed.

I heard there hav been some management changes Warren is no longer there as the Harbormaster?

Funny, we're in D18. Only been there a couple years. We love Oxbow, but yes a few changes in the works. Warren retired last year. The GM Jim Deak, of the well know Deak family on the Delta, is also retiring. Berthers have lost use of the clubhouse and the rental house. Still a great place though. We've actually thought of buying one of the homes there and moving. I know what you mean about WB, but I think it has gotten a little more friendly and down to earth recently. Our shed neighbors at Oxbow just moved there, so we'll see how they like it. My in-laws were there for nearly 30 years. It is a really nice facility.

And closer to all travel points in the Delta....

Good luck on your choice.

Shawn

Yes, that is a big factor. Saves about 90 minutes / 10 miles (RT) of travel on most outings. Gas savings alone almost covers the difference in slip fees.

Next time you see Jim tell him Shawn Murphy says Hi and is healthy and happy in the New Orleans area.

My wife already knows my best days are rainy days and days she's not there. All the cleaning gets done and all the small things get fixed. I think she loves those same days
First Mate was heartbroken when I wouldn't let him join me the first night I had my boat--I was bonding!!! And I kept on bonding the next day, too, cleaning and figuring out what every button and switch did, 'til finally I let him come over that evening for some celebratory bubbly and an overnighter before our maiden voyage on the weekend.

It's been four years, and last Friday I had plans to go to the boat late to take care of some piddly things that just keep falling to the bottom of the list. Then FM informed me he was joining me wherever I was, and I just didn't want to share boat time so I switched gears and had him come to the house instead!
I was looking for a hobby and was looking at Golf or Boating. Decided to be a boater since no Boating magazines have Viagra or Cialis adds. Figure that is not an issue for boaters like it is for golfers.
A girlfriend was having difficulty convincing her husband to get a boat, for a myriad of reasons. While shopping one day (he halfheartedly), she showed him how to flatten the back-to-back helm and aft-facing seats, said, "But honey....there's boat $ex!" and then he couldn't write the check fast enough!

If the husband would have taken a few moments to think about this before writing that check he would have done the fairly easy math and discovered buying and maintaining and operating a boat is not a very cost effective way to 'scratch that itch'.........;).....you can buy a LOT of nice dinners and romantic evenings for a lot less money.....

Yet another thing that is even better on the boat.......

NorCal Boater
Shawn, I told Jim Deak hello for you. Just in time, tomorrow is his last day. As soon as I mentioned your name he said, "Oh yea, Shawn. He had a big boat right here!" As he pointed to the first big guest slip at the marina. He says hello back!

Thank you. Jim is a great guy and we had many conversations on how to make the marina better. I did notice that my old club, Marina West Yacht Club moved into Oxbow. That was one of my suggestions to Jim and the club. MWYC had a terrible situation at Tower Park. I wish Jim all the best.

I don’t think of myself as a boater, really. I enjoy our boat, even go sit in it when we can’t launch. But I do the same thing with the camper.
On the other hand, I am hardly some neophyte holiday lunatic on the water, either.
Even though it’s no cruiser or destroyer, I still take pride in my ship handling skills and keep a ship shape craft.

Yes, MWYC moved here in May of 2016. So, do you know Jerry and Tina Tremain?

Ok I will. So now I have to ask if you know Paul and Joanne Sharps. Sea Ray club and were in WB Marina for almost 30 years.

My name is Chris and I am a BOATER! I have it bad and not interested in any "cure"

Our first vessel was a 21 wellcraft, breaking in slowly. A year later we wanted a cruiser so a '28 Rinker. A year after that a '34 DA with a Gen, next came a "47 harbar master HB as the family grew. As we boat on the Ohio River in KY after 13 years we wanted something more stable and "comfortable" so a "65 Monticello River Yacht replaced our beloved Harbor Master. Kids and friends kept growing so a Malibu wakesetter joined the fleet - that lasted 2 years and was a blast. College came along for all 3 of our kids so the Admiral and I added the best one yet - 420 DA and kept the Monticello as our "cabin". We have boated more this year then almost all the prior boats thanks to having the experience and pleasure of heading out for a cruise no matter the conditions. The Monticello is like a sail and at a 20' beam i can almost touch pulpits as we exit our marina (no thruster on that girl unfortunately). The Ray is the best handling vessel we have owned and we just love it, not to mention just looking at her makes me smile!!
These days I almost look for thinks to fix or replace just to have a project and with those two boats the list is longer then I thought! Now that the admiral doesnt have to be medicated with liquid courage to assist with leaving the marina, she is a different mate!
A nice rainy day in KY thanks to the latest hurricane pushing through and I am heading to the River from some list punching - RIVER - LIFE

chris OUT!
