I know this may not be the area for a 1990 SR question, but the purchase order dates 1989 so....

I purchased a 1990, Sea Ray 310 Express cruiser and it has a rear bench screwed to the transom via a hinge. Some would call this a piano hinge. I was wondering... why does it flip up? Is it simply to clean under it? Should I be able to flip it up and tie it up for more cockpit room. There are straps, but I can't figure out what they're for. Are there any modification ideas to make it easily removed and reinstalled? The reason why I'm asking is that if I want to fish, I wouldn't want it there. If I want to go out with my family, I would. Any one have any tips on this particular feature of this boat? The bench seat slides forward, two metal support legs can then be secured underneath, and the backrests are inserted between the bench and the transom, making a sunning lounge. The entire bench flips up, though. Why would it do that if the only thing I can do is clean under it. That's important, but....

Thanks.

Sorry, I don't have any useful information for you but I am interested in anything you learn about the seat. We just purchased a 1994 Express and have been looking for a way to take the seat out for fishing as well. If I come up with anything, I will let you know.

OK, SG. I mean, I know I can always unscrew it, but there are a lot of screws. And, there must be a reason there is a strap. I'm just not seeing it. I've got this black strap that's hanging there (viewable in the picture), and I just don't know what it's for.

Same thing, can't figure out the strap. I am always hesitant to remove screws too because they never go back as tight as before for me. The manuals are fairly generic to don't mention it. I have searched for a model specific supplement for my boat with no luck. I have seen them for other Sea Rays, like a 1997 Sundancer.

This is just a wild guess as I have never been on your model...

-- Is the hinge actually a "double" hinge? If so, you may be able to remove the backrest cushions, then pull the seat a few inches forward and flip the seat all the way up and use the black strap to somehow secure it in a vertical position against the transom wall. A double hinge would allow this.

maybe it lifts up to provide access to larger engine covers removal, besides just the day hatch in the center.

I think you may be right. I keep looking at it and don't see with the base on it that it would be practical to fold it all the way to the transom.

Whats under the hatch directly under the seat?

If I remember correctly the one time I was in there a few weeks ago, the shafts, engine water pickups and I think the freshwater tank? I have slid the seat out to drain water from it when washing back there but it doesn't seem to be a double hinge. The seat only goes up a few inches.

I have actually taken the backrests off, pulled the bench seat forward, and tried to swing the whole bench up vertically. I almost get it to go that way, but it doesn't quite fit. Anyway, seems kind of a dangerous idea to do that and secure it with the strap. I mean, if that thing let go, it would come down with quite a bit of force!

So far the straps seem like a waste to me. I can't even get them to reach a place to attachment them!!

This, again, is just a guess... but try pulling the seat forward and then lifting the BACK edge of the seat up. In other words, get the seat into a vertical position with the cushions facing forward. Maybe the black strap is only there to aid in pulling the seat forward since it's likely easier to lift the seat a bit at the same time you're pulling forward.
