Hi all.

I need to cover my onan gen to protect the electronic box (top left part of gen where the caution stickers and AC breaker placed) from water which is coming from where the hatch and deck meets when my d*mb*ss boat valet washes the boat by spraying with pressure water handle.

So a cover made by sunbrella or nylon-tarp kind cover would protect from getting wet but will that crate disaster for creating more heat or fire ?

Any suggestions ?

TIA.

I'm moving to Turkey. :)

If you are looking for some flame resistant material to make a soft cover I would look up some industrial insulation companies. Most can sew up a soft cover using material that is flame resistant that they use around industrial pumps and pipes.

But seriously I believe these generators are meant to be used in wet conditions and a little water on the cover isn't going to hurt. I wouldn't take a water hose directly to the unit however.

Haha thanks Ducky.

Boat valet means hear who washes the boat, makes the mooring/dock lines ready for cruising, topping up the fresh water tank, puts the dock water hose to the city water inlet when we came to the boat, runs A/C, puts on and off the cockpit/winter cover except driving/captaining which I never let anybody to drive my boat/car even my bike.

Wellcome to Turkey, it would be nice to see you here and do some late summer boating, I mean going to work by bike wearing shirts and tshirts, swimming in the evening while it's still 30 C degrees outside.:p:D

I think I need something like that you mentioned beacuse when I solved the code 61 fault of my gen today I found a little more than few drops of water under that box in the electrical components where the brain/board is located, so to prevent further shower of gen I need to cover it.

The misfortune of my gen is being placed just under the hatch opening and due to the 2003,5-2008 340DA's entire deck lifts up as engine hatch and starboard corner of deck allows water right on to the gen when heavy water sprayed like my boat valet did which I'm gonna spray some money from his wallet to make that cover.

Just a quick question....

Does your hatches have a rubber seal around them to help prevent the water intrusion or is the pressure washer blowing it right past them?

The hatch have but the deck not and it's the female part where water pools and leaks down, good thought, gonna search for a seal to fit there.

Why a soft material? I would think an aluminum or galvanized metal sheet could be easily fitted to channel water away from the panel...

In the meantime, I couldn't stop staring at the yellow diesel in your racor. That looks so strange when we're used to seeing red fuel!

Haha thanks, you beat me to it.

Just took the dimensions to fabricate a ss 1-2 mm sheet over the electronic box until the top inspection lid "no step" as seen in my below sketch which will tell better than me.

Front and right side of gen's will bend upward and left side to downward at 45 degrees.

I'm planning to use the existing bolts to secure the protector.

As for the yellow diesel, we don't have any diferent diesel of road and offroad, some European countries have IIRC, we have just regular diesel and eurodiesel both yellow.

Euro is the ULSD which we use in boats and I put Biobor jf per Frank Webster's recommendation to make the lubrication regularly as the eurodiesel is lack of sulfur and to obtain a clean tank and fuel.

When I have water or algae etc the yellow diesel turns blackish and its time to drain the racor bowl and check/change the filter element, but never had it in this boat since I bought it in may 2015 thank God Yanmars have return fuel coolers and I installed wolverine oil pan heaters that keeps bilge dry and the oil temp at 50 C degrees in fall-spring-summer and 30C in winter while snowing and ambient temp is -11 C degrees.

So I had it done, here are the pics.
