Throttle cable problems

All of the sudden I am having slackness in the throttle cable on the port engine on my 2000 340 and I have to move the lever almost half way to increase the RPM. I looked at the cable in the ER and everything looks OK. Any idea on what it could be? Thanks.

My guess would be a break somewhere in the middle of the cable.

If the protective covering of the cable chafes and wears through, water can then enter the cable and cause rust which slowly breaks one strand at a time until there are only a few strands left. Once you're at that point the strands stretch when the throttle is used.

Disconnect the cable at the engine and see if it moves freely and how much of the cable end moves in and out.

I would also check to see if the cable sheath on both ends are secure.

If there's a broken clip or a worn out grommet allowing the cable sheath to move this could be causing your issue as well.

FYI. The clip as missing. I put a new one and now it works fine.
Thanks a lot for the advise.
