460 DA Owners Thread

I am looking at the 2003 to 2006 460DA's and was told by a salesman that the Cummins 480CE have a problem with dropping valves and costing up to $25,000 to repair. I'm a farmer and have all kind of diesel motors in equipment and semi trucks and have never had a problem with any kind of diesel engines such as dropping valves. Has anyone have knowledge of this problem or is that just a salesman talking? Thank you for any input.

Fixing any major problem with marine engines is costly but $25K is more like the cost for a total rebuild top to bottom. Especially since the cost of a factory RECON engine is about that - my M3 450s were $24K each.

Has anyone replaced the port alternator?
As with many things - it looks to be a tight fit on that side to get to it.

It's tight but doable. I'm over 6 feet and 220+ lbs. Take a pic of the serpentine belt routing before you release it. I'm glad I did or I would have had to remove the stbd. cover to see it. I also bought a new 24si alternator from the local truck parts store. Same Delco alternator quite a bit cheaper.

OK - thanks
Good tip on taking a pic of the belt (I'm going to replace it while I have to pull it anyway)
I got lucky and saw that the stbd alternator had been replaced 4 years ago
I had forgotten that the service shop had an alarm issue and replaced the stbd one - they used a local alternator shop their price is $187.
I'm sure that it's a remanufactured one but at that price and the fact that the stbd one has run well for 4+ years, I'll give them another shot.

Super easy job. Remove the bolts holding the cover on, then the alternator bracket and the wires on the unit. Probably 1 hour max. Fred, I have a spare rebuilt alternator if you want it...

Sounds like a mere 3 band aid job!
And thanks for the alternator ...

Question for the 460DA owners with Cummins 6CTA: Which thermostats do you use? The original 160 degree or the optional 180 degree? I have had conflicting opinions and for safety I continue to run the standard 160 degree stats. Engine temps never exceed 160 (clean cooling system, SMX seawater pumps) and I was hoping to improve combustion a bit by changing to the hotter thermostats. My diesel dealer was set to do it but sent me a Technical Service bulletin stating that 160 stats are recommended.

Thanks for any opinions.

I have 180's now - I went through sbmar and they recommended the 160 thermostats so that's what I'm swapping to

Thanks, interesting.... It seems like there is a change of opinion. Maybe the safety margin of the 160's is more important?
I changed to the SMX pumps from sbmar seven years ago and they made a big difference with amount of seawater pumped.

We use 160's. Changing to higher isn't recommended and won't make a difference in combustion. Pressure creates the heat in the diesel combustion cycle.

On my 2002 460 there is a cigarette lighter / 12V socket in the saloon above the galley counter top.

Please can somebody tell me where the 12 volts for this socket comes from, (and don't say the batteries).

I have hunted everywhere to try and establish the power source and why there is no current at the socket, all to no avail.

Any guidance gratefully accepted.

Graham

As far as the thermostats... This was heavily debated on boatdiesel.com. The result was use the 160* so you have a slight margin of error. I have the 160*'s and the boat runs just over, maybe 165* at WOT and has new aftercoolers and cleat heat exchangers.

Graham: I don't have that outlet so sorry I'm not any help.

Josh

Thermostats: I called SBMAR and they definitely told me to keep the 160's.

Graham: did you pull that socket out? Something tells me that this has an inline fuse. I can't recall if I checked this out myself....

I'm dealing with no guages or Smartcraft working on the Port engine. Anybody have suggestions? I contacted Mercury and
Have the schematics the hook-ups. Unfortunately I was in an auto wreck 8 weeks ago and can't get to the boat....

We are scheduled to pick up our new to us 2001 460 da. Next friday.Does anyone have a grill on their boat if so where is it mounted. Second question we will be updating the navigation over the winter. Any tips on Installation and what to stay away from or what to look at would be appreciated. Thanks John.

Hi John, I upgraded some of my electronics on my 99 this past winter. If you want to message me I can fill you in on what I did so as to not bore others on the thread since they may have seen some of it.

Also, I have a grill that I use on my boat but I actually place it in eh rod holder with that type of mount and store it in the transom locker when not in use.

We did a bunch of research on the grill and mounting. We go one of the larger Magnums and put it on the swim platform so it doesn't impact the cockpit and guests there. We have the screw in pedestal with the base mounted under the lid for the swim ladder. It works great and is completely out of the way. It also places the grilling well away from the boat for smoke, grease etc.

Also upgraded all the electronics two years ago. Went with all Raymarine, the new eS series. Put an eS128 on the left and an eS75 in the center above the wheel. Left of that is the AP control head and put two i70s on the right to display other data. Got a new dash panel from Tecnografic to make it all look right.

Nothing new here, another boat issues that needs to be resolved...........

Spending a week on board in our Home Marina, and I have noticed that despite the town water supply having plenty of pressure, the water supply at all the taps is better using the on board pumps that just using the town supply.

I am aware there is a pressure regulator in the system, where do I find it and is there a filter in it somewhere that may need cleaning.

Thanks in anticipation

Graham

I believe the regulator is part of the connection point for city water. I've had to replace mine due to a leak. I don't remember a filter but recall the pressure limit was 35 psi.
