Trip Recap. San Juan Islands bare boat charter ( long )

Mark,
Thanks for the write up. I'm a 340DA owner with a dry dock in Everett, WA. Would love to tag on to the Flotilla if that happens.
Peace!

Thanks for the recap and the photos. I recognize the Sea Ray (Current Sea) in the Victoria Harbor photo - they're from our marina. If you would have been at Roche Harbor from July 14 to 17 you would have seen lot of Sea Rays there for the annual LUSR Rendezvous, including ours and Lina Lina. We saw orcas when we arrived.

Larry,

I meant to respond - then forgot. The posting tonight prompted me when I saw your note again.

We spent a delightful evening on the cockpit of Current Sea. Very nice couple - along with the pup. They are the folks who recommended Rosario to us. If you see them - tell the people from Texas said hello. (there cannot have been that many people from Tx anchored in front of the Empress hotel that week).

Great folks. They came over to our rental for a bit, then we went over to their Dancer to spend time with the pup.

Mark

Will let you know if we make it back up there next summer. We really tried for a September trip. The Charter company has a Fleming that I would like to spend a week on. September this year is just not going to work out. Next year....

Captain - per your request a couple more...

She actually spent as much if not more time on the helm than I did.

This picture made me laugh when I saw it again. Had cleared customs in Victoria, the marina we were booked in is straight in front of us. Sunday afternoon - it was a tangled mess in the Marina. You can see from one of the pictures above how boats were packed in side by side 7-9 boats deep.

Dockmaster was scurrying about, getting a couple of blocked boats out - repositioning incoming traffic since some people had not left. We sat out in this area for 40-50 minutes. Those little yellow boats are water taxis - they were like Black Flys. Darting around, almost running up under your bow.

About this time I hear the Dock Master on the radio: "ahhhhh I know there are several boats waiting to dock, I am not sure how many of you there are, I think 3 or 4. I dropped my slip assignment sheet in the water. Why don't you guys just line up and come in and find a place".

We were at Causeway this past Thursday through Saturday morning. Those water taxis cracked us up, except they didn't really care if you were on course, they zipped right in front of us.
When we went to leave Saturday morning we were boxed in and the marina wasn't manned yet. There was a 40 something foot trawler behind us that weighed 38,000 lbs, super nice couple. We got our boat turned around and we manuvered to the middle and they got several people on their lines and moved back so I could squeeze out, fun stuff.

Just saw this thread. These two boats aren't even remotely the same. GFC's crop from FF's posted pic shows a Flush Deck Motoryacht and the trapezoidal shapes are the windows in the the saloon. Further look at the Radar/Satellite Domes between the two pics.

FootballFan, that was a great write-up, thanks for sharing.

Bingo - LTD. I think you just solved the great Trapezoid mystery. I went back to the original post - where the pictures are. I referenced that was us on the Right of the picture - Actually that was us in the center. My bad on my comment about the picture, will see if I can edit the comment.

Wow this is funny. Laying on the couch in my hotel room at the empress as I type this. Great place, good write up.

We went back to the PNW a couple of weeks ago. Haven't posted any after action details, but suffice to say wonderful area to boat in. Highly recommend a trip for folks that are not west coast.

We had a boat with pod drives this most recent trip ( Sabre with IPS). Thinking about posting a recap of my first time experience with Pods for 7 days.

This past trip we spend a lot of the time either anchored or moored in the islands.

Wow - the San Juan islands are something every boater should experience - definite bucket list.

Flying up we were talking about it would be our last trip for a while ( until we do the Alaska flotilla) since we hope to be in our next boat on the Atlantic side in the next few weeks or months.

During the trip we decided that even with a new to us boat, we will be back there next summer.

It is truely an amazing place. We went a couple of years ago and figured it would be a one time deal, well we went the next year too.
Once we get another boat we'll probably go again.
