removal of old boat name decal

I use a heat gun and patience. Never had a problem. I did use one of those eraser wheels once, it works ok, but more of a pain in my opinion. Get it nice and warm with the gun and peel back slowly. Follow up with acetone to remove the glue.

3m decal removing wheel does a great job! Just removed/replaced both my 280 Sundancer decals and the fuel warning decal and it worked well. Bought it on Amazon. BIG ONE - no scratches, gouges, or discoloration of the gel coat.

years ago folks used oven cleaner. are there any updated methods ?

If it's painted on sure (although pretty uncommon these days). You can also get a solvent from West Marine etc. My first boat had a painted name.

For vinyl decals, a heat gun is tried and true. Removed several names, decals, and Reg numbers that way. Never tried the eraser.

Quite a few videos on youtube..... heat gun seems to be the preferred method then follow up with googone.

I would avoid acetone it's just toooo harsh.

3m eraser wheel as mentioned....awesome tool.

Mine was painted on and I did the oven cleaner method. It worked really well, turned the surface yellow however some vinegar and time (month or two) and you can't tell it was ever there.

Last time I removed vinyl letters from my boat I grabbed a heat gun and plastic scraper, but found the scraper by itself was all I needed.

+1
The sun has been my heat gun--did it on the hook while the rays baked decals, using a plastic scraper to help with any stubborn spots but avoid damaging the gel coat. Used Goo Gone for any leftover adhesive, then soap/water or regular 409 to clean the Goo Gone.

I removed the old boat name with a heat gun and plastic scraper but this spring removed the hull length stripes on both sides and bought the 3M eraser wheel. So much easier. Took about 3 hours to do about 40+' of striping. They do wear down so if you have alot to do might want to buy a second one. No marking or blemishing at all. Worked great!

I guess I was lucky. I removed mine with my finger nails. They were stickers and once I got started it was pretty easy to just peel off

+1 on the 3M wheel...
