First time post so go easy. New boat to us... 2001 340 7.4 Horizons having issue with starboard engine. When throttling up engine it pauses at around 3200 rpm for approx 3-5 seconds then continues and eventually syncs with port engine. Any suggestions?

just a word of advice on posting since your are new here......if you provide as much detail as possible about what the problem is and what you have done to correct it or at least investigate the problem the more helpful responses you will get....without details helping diagnose an issue over the internet is extremely difficult....it is also good to know your level of comfort with handling tools and your knowledge of mechanical systems on the boat.....

just based on your post there are MANY possible causes for this type problem....some are related to fuel supply and some are related to ignition.....my first suggestion would be to do a full tune-up of the engines especially if you don't know when the last time a tune-up was performed......many, many times problems like this get corrected by the tune-up.....but if the problem does not go away after a tune-up then we can get deeper into the issue with additional details as mentioned before....

good luck and welcome to CSR......and I like your choice of boat...... :)

Our 340 search led us today to a 2001 with the 454 horizons (not the newer 8.1s). The boat is beautiful, but has 900 hours. If we can make the numbers work and I decide I'm ok with high hours I'd go ahead with the oil samples and compression check before the hull survey. My real question is were these the motors with the reversion issues? I can't find for sure if it's the 7.4 310hp or these. They do have water lift mufflers installed, not sure if they're stock or not.

The 8.1 horizons had the issue. If they have the spacers on hem, you should be good to go. That was a long time ago and most people fixed the issue so they did not ingest water.

awesome, that's good news. T-VD-454 Magnum® MPI Horizon MerCruiser® are the motors it has, must have been too early in 2001 to get the 8.1's

either way it has the mufflers and what look like 3" riser blocks between the manifold and elbow. As far as the closed cooling goes, I believe the manifolds are fresh water cooled and then the risers and elbows are RWC?

actually all of the different engine options in the 1999 - 2001 cruiser boats had water ingestion problems due to the log style exhaust....the high performance big blocks were more at risk due to the overlap of the intake and exhaust valves causing a small suction through the exhaust.....I looked at two different boats (310 model) of this era with 350 small blocks engines with the log exhaust that had ruined engines due to water reversion....

if the engines will reach the expected WOT during a sea trial and a compression check comes out clean the engines are likely OK.....

For what its worth, water ingestion notwithstanding, 900 hours is not generally considered high mileage on these guys. Maybe double that and you're getting closer to needing some attention on properly maintained motors? Sub 1,000 has a whole lotta useful life left.

Thanks guys, I'm with you on the hours. While they're "high" for the area we're in (4 month or less season), I don't have much of an issue with it in terms of usable life. I will go with a full compression/leak down test, oil samples of drives and engines, and the WOT sea trial. The benefit on our end is given what the deal considers high hours, the price is right.

Working on a trade with our boat, so we'll see where we land.

Does anyone know if the water lift mufflers would have been OEM or would those have been added later? If added later I want to try and find out when.

I believe the water lift mufflers became standard from the factory in 2002.......

I have a late model 2002 and it has the waterlifts

I am adding a Garmin GPSMap 742 to my 2000 340 Dancer. I am thinking about installing it in the angled area under my C80 and above the VHF radio, to the left of the shifters. Anyone know how hard it will be to cut the hole in helm fiberglass? Any tips on how to do this?

My 01 was a modification, after a short and long block repair in 2002...

Thanks, I'm hoping this boat was retro'd early on to help stop some of the reversion. Everything I've read around the issues sounds like it was either "fixed" early by modification or the affected engines died an early death. Seeing as it has made it to 900 hours my fingers are crossed it's not a victim of the issue. We'll see.

I've done some cutting on the dash of my boat so I have an idea what you will be facing....the dash is well over 1" thick.....I have used a jig saw and an angle grinder to do a rough cut then use a rotary tool such as a Dremel with a side cutting bit to make final adjustments to the hole.....tape the area well before cutting so not to scratch the dash with the jig saw....this should not be a problem but just be aware that if the new GPS is over a few inches thick you could run into interference with the VHF radio below it.....I would at least cover the VHF radio while cutting the hole but better yet is just remove it prior to cutting....

there is a lot of room behind the dash.....working in the area is not bad....you can reach up from the opening under the steering wheel where the electrical breakers are located.....the breaker panel will swing down for more clearance if you unsnap the retainer strap on the right side.....

I just a big hole for my GPS, If you want I can text you detailed pics of what it looks like and how thick.

i killed 4 brand new blades on my jigg saw to make the cut but itsdone ha. PM me for my cell and I can text you all kinds of pics, did it 4 weeks ago.

Waterlifts and intrusion??? I'm currently looking at an 2000 340 and a 2003 340. One has 7.4 380 h.p. and the other 8.1s. How do I check for this as I am not familiar with this problem? Anything else I should be looking at besides deck moisture??? Thanks

Thanks Cliff!

I have been measuring it out. The power cable will be just to the cabin door side of the VHF radio and will clear it. I have a right angle NMEA 2000 drop cable on the way. Should just fit perfectly. At the worst I will need to add a small thickness riser plate for under the GPSmap. I have the radio out already while measuring this. It is pretty open under there. I also need to figure out where to draw power for both the GPSmap and the NMEA backbone...
