I have a 1986 SeaRay 300 Weekender.
The gas cap has no restraining gear once it is removed to get gas.
I'm afraid I'll drop it into the drink and have nothing to replace it.
I have attached a photo of it. If anyone can ID it for me I'd
be very grateful.
Thanks for any help.

Are you sure it's not just missing the safety chain? Is there a small screw on the inside of the cap and the deck plate? Or at least a place where one should go? IF it originally had one, a replacement can be put back in.

The connector for the safety chain corroded away years ago by the look of it. I guess all I can do is take a better look next time I take it off. I didn't see any corresponding connection point anywhere. I'm at a loss.

i have seen those caps at the local sear ray dealer. i think they are about $35. the chain attaches to the center of the back of the cap and to the inside edge of the tube. i think they sell new tubes too but can't say for sure. my water cap chain is broke but the gas side is good. i have been wanting to replace the chain on the water but keep forgetting

Definitely look closer for the connection point on the deck plate side. IF that is truly gone, then your only choice is to replace the entire set. At that point, it doesn't matter as much as to what you currently have there. You can even go with a newer style with integrated vent and/or a cap that doesn't require the key to loosen/tighten. But, sticking with the same kind you have there, I would look at Perko first as chances are best that's the brand that Sea Ray used. Last I checked, although it's been a while, I think you can still get that exact fitting. Attwood is another good company to check with.

I got a Sea Choice cap at the local marine store in my town when I dropped mine in the water after the chain broke during fill up. I keep a few spares on hand just in case.

Along with what Scorp said, chances are good that pretty much any manufacturer's cap that looks like yours will fit (not guaranteed, of course, but good chances). Sea Dog is another manufacturer to check with.

Buy a cap as soon as you can locate one. I bought fuel in northern lower Michigan in 1986 for my new Week Ender. The gas dock guy managed to break the chain pulling the pump handle nozzle out of the filler opening. I figured that I could drive to a marina in Traverse City and pick up a new one. It took me a week to find the part because the threads are weird on that cap. Having a chain is little protection. I always place the caps inside the boat whenever I get fuel dock services now because of that experience.

I used some stainless braded fishing leader to replace some of the beaded chains on mine, the chains are too fragile.

My 370 Express had a similar set up. Much better than chains. Still need to be careful around the gas dock as some of the service personnel are a bit shy of a full load.

Thank you for the responses. It looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. Once I find the cap I'll get a couple just to be on the safe side.
