Where has this forum gone?

Regarding the "Women of Sea Ray" bikini threads - eh, I'd just as soon not see that stuff here. I'm a woman and most of the time I'm the captain of our vessel and those threads feel degrading to those mechanically-inclined women who are here for knowledge and not for looking at someone else's boobs (I have my own thanks!). Just my two cents and another perspective for those who might mistakenly assume that this is a men's-only club. (Aren't there enough bikini and boating related sites out there without cluttering CSR?)

Agree with Sandy. On the very rare occasion I look at the site while at the office, the last thing I need is for someone to see those kinds of photos displayed on my monitor. So, no.

Sandy (yes - I'm a woman!!)

Terrific! Would be nice to see more women in boating.

Umm..
Can you talk my wife into trying to operate the boat? It would make life a little easier if I could turn the helm over to her while I make the dock lines fast. :)

You don't want a bikini section because your boss might find out you're screwing around on company time surfing the web?...don't click on it:smt043

Hi guys,

I've only been a member for a year but I can tell you that I would not leave this site for anything since I can deal with nasty people when necessary (perks of being a business owner for so many years - nothing phases me!). We came from a 30' gas engine Chaparral and moved to a 450DA (diesel with pods) which is a HUGE change. I've learned so much here and I can personally credit those who reached out to me while we were working through a significant issue last winter with Mercury Marine with having that situation turn out to be very successful for our boat and for our family. As a result I am eternally grateful for the knowledge, the willingness to share and the fun experiences shared here as well (hello Rob in Australia!!).

My company has been extremely busy for the past month but we're fully back into our regular cruising season so I'll be popping in more frequently in the months to come. I do try to respond to threads where I have knowledge to share and can potentially help someone else so my participation is not just limited to what I can get out of the forum. I agree that the large threads for each boat type tend to evolve into forums of their own so if there is a thought to reorganize threads or forum sections, I would love to see some of those larger threads go away. I'm sure there is a ton of good information in there that I'm missing out on threads where it's not my type of boat and so the thread appears to be not relevant to me.

At any rate, I'll do my best to participate more frequently and I do hope that the tenor of this site more or less remains the same. Thoughtful and free sharing of information about our Sea Ray's that we love so much.

Thanks guys,

Sandy (yes - I'm a woman!!)

Sandy - wife and I will be cruising San Juan's in July on a chartered boat. If you and the family are out on the water during that time - let me know. Our float plan is not set - but its not that big an area.

Senior management doesn't particularly mind about that. What they do mind is the potential appearance of sexual harassment. You are vaguely aware that this is the twenty-first century. Right?

I think Sandy and your Admiral should meet me here in Nashville for our own Women on the Water session, with Sandy as lead instructor. I'm still quite green, but love to share what I do know with other women who either haven't been bitten hard enough by the boating bug, or who for whatever reason think they can't do this.

My friends look forward to "Girls' Day on the Lake" any time I can plan them, and it's a wonderful experience for all of us to be learning together. (It's mostly social, but my closest girlfriends now know how to pitch a dock line for a raft up, tie a cleat hitch, and fend off or pull into a dock with the boat hook!!!)

I'm familiar with such a situation....an employee that was in Playboy magazine and a page from the issue floating around the plant.:wow:

No peaking at CSR's Bikini section FC3, keep the guffaws down... better yet, get back to work.

We keep our boat in Tacoma and live 5 minutes away... let me know when you what to go for a boat ride.

We're still finalizing our cruise plans for the end of July but we will for sure be in Roche Harbor August 11-13th. Would love to connect!

If only I was closer I absolutely would! With my husband and I, our love of boating evolved at the same time and I think that helped. We learned everything together. Would you consider taking an on-water boating course with your wife? An instructor will put you both through your paces. That's what we did and it was fun to see that I could dock the boat as well as my husband could. We're both still learning our new boat and it's been a great experience to go through it together. Good luck!

Sandy

Hi, I found FrankW to be a absolute well of knowledge, would you know what the new forum is?

Brett.

There is no forum that replaced CSR. Some of us helped Sea Ray Boats develop and flesh out the new SR owners Club (SROC) but it isn't a forum and was never intended to be. I do spend a little time on SROC, but to put things in perspective, we have 40,000 members and the SROC has about 10% of that number so the depth of knowledge and experience here is much greater, just because we have more active members and it is a forum where we exchange ideas and learn from each other. The other thing that keeps me interested is the fact that CSR is a forum dedicated to one brand. That tends to make the forum much more harmonious and positive. I don't come here to bicker, argue, or enter into adversarial exchanges....I did that for 25 years in a Fortune 400 company, dealing with empire builders and ego-centric knot-heads was part of the job description, but I had enough of that. I do this for fun and to help others, as do most of us who are here regularly.

So, thanks for the compliment, I'm glad I was able to help you, but I haven't gone anywhere except to give others a chance to step in. If I miss a post or a question, maybe I'm just doing my own thing. If you want my input, feel free to PM me if I happen to miss a post that is important to you.

thanks,

I'll chime in. As a relatively newbie SeaRay owner (we bought our 280DA last October), the forum has been invaluable to me. I had a nasty water leak and between suggestions from posts and Jason78's great write-up (with guidance from Rusty) on re-bedding rub rails I got it fixed. There has been a ton of information on electrical wiring, plumbing, engines, etc. that has made life a lot easier. This is a great information source and I have tried to give back in posting pics, etc of some of the repairs and projects I've done. I've seen some earlier comments about searching and the mega-model threads and hope that gets better with the software upgrade mentioned.

To those who own and maintain the forum, and to those who contribute information, thanks!

Now off to my next project... the wimpy Kohler in my 280 is not putting out enough juice so I am mounting a portable Honda generator on the swim platform and will be wiring them in tandem....

Frank - "ego-centric knot-heads" is a perfect description of many people I work with.

I'll admit I have spent very little time on the site this past 6-9 months but do still check in once a week or so. It has changed and the level of contribution as well as banter seems lower. I think that there are still plenty of 'characters' out there in our CSR community however and I hope a new group of men and women step-in and continue to make new contributions to the site.

There are only a few reasons that would explain the changes on this great site (to which I have been a member since day 1). 1) too many great members leaving, 2) lack of helpful, interesting (and accessible) content, 3) new site taking it's place, 4) a general trending decrease in members/owners who post and interact... My feeling is #4, but there were definitely posts I followed just because I wanted to see the pot stirring first hand.

One other thought. The newer boats are being purchased by people who just aren't into the DIY as much as many of us on this site are. As we sell and get out of boating, the newbies PERHAPS aren't rushing in to figure-out where the holding tank duck-valves are on their 3 year old $500K SeaRay?

Thanks for the reply Frank, and the kind offer to knowledge share via PM if needed, much appreciated, it can get a little lonely at times being a SeaRay owner and DIY'er Down Under!

I think another reason may be that social media is a lot more active these days.
There are currently four Sea Ray Facebook groups :-
Sea Ray Owners - 6500+ members,
Sea Ray Owners/Lovers - 1400+ members,
Sea Ray Owners Club - 950 members and
Club Sea Ray - 40+ members (mostly from this forum I believe)

Even tho there is a lot of technical discussion and knowledge sharing on these Facebook groups, a forum, by nature, and CSR is certainly no exception, is still far superior for in depth discussion and technical assistance.

Cheers

Well, I for one, don't like Facebook, am not on it and don't plan to be. I think the gold standard for a forum to help owners is clubsearay.com. There may be a lot of interaction, sharing of recipes and looking as strangers children, between members on a Facebook page, but if you have a broke boat and need help, you stand a lot better chance of getting sound, quality advice from experienced boaters right here.
