i need a backrest for my boat and i was not aware that i couldn't just locate and purchase one. West marine said there is no aftermarket seats? took it off for reupholstering and found it really damaged. need new. What to do?

If you can't find one through salvage, you'll have to build one using the old as a pattern. Flounder pounder marine recycles a lot of Sea Ray parts.

You will need a professional upholstery person who can build it for you. May not be easy to find. That is a better winter type project for them when you do.

I am in the process of making my own back / head rest upgrade for our boat. I created a wood drop in piece where 4 pins drop into my seat back that I worked over. Once I get the final wood shape I want I will have it upholstered to the look I want to see. If you want I can post some pics of where I am at so far.

Yeah guys pics would be great! not sure if im tackling this or not yet. My upholstery guy may be giving me a hand. THANKS!

As you can see from the photo the the old piece was pretty rotten. But enough to give me template. From here I used marine plywood and marked were the bends would be. I used my skill saw and in the zones were the curves were I adjusted my saw not to cut all the way thru the ply wood. And then screwed the two pieces together. The cuts I later filled for strength

Thanks! And i WILL be tackling this. Noone wants the job so...can i use regular plywood or would that not be wise? Not sure where to get marine plywood. Havent checked around yet though.....

I had to rebuild the rear folding bench on my 270 AJ when the composite (Starboard?) base cracked. Fortunately there were no bends. If you want to get fancy you could steam the plywood, then bend it over a form and clamp it.

For my new core I used plywood and drilled good sized holes for air ventilation of the cushion (like the original). Then I coated the whole thing in West System epoxy so there's virtually no chance of the thing rotting out in my lifetime. Luckily the upholstery skin was in really good shape so I could just install that over the new base. I used monel staples so they won't rust out either.
