Hey Great Lakes boaters.
i am wondering how many of you have an epirb? We have crossed Lake Michigan before Saugatuck to Chicago. We have a couple trips planned this season. I think for the price it's good for piece of mind but curious what others thoughts are on if it is a needed piece of safety equipment or unnecessary.

Yes, we bought a plb instead so i can use on different boats. We take it with when cruising on friends boats. It all helps.

350 bucks could be the best investment of your life...

Yup, I have one, it provides a nice level of extra protection. You have a few options out there for different devices. Make sure you have a proper ditch bag ready to go too. Folks have a tendency to overlook that.

Time to go boating!

We cross Lake Michigan frequently and have our EPIRB in it's pouch of the ditch bag every time. Just a regular part of the safety package for peace of mind.

Our son's in the USCG and was conducting a training flight in the Gulf of Mexico the other day when he had to conduct his own SAR. 20' sailboat way off the coast , engine out, radio out, mast broken been drifting for some time . When he managed to make contact found out he didn't even have an EPIRB! He radioed in his position and a USCG boat got him but if he hadn't been spotted by the C130 who knows.......Just to cheap to buy an EPIRB I suppose. It can prove to be the best investment you may ever make! Just hope no one has to find out the hard way. I think the Coasties kinda take a dim view of those that go miles off shore etc., and don't have one as IMHO it's just plain stupid not to have one.

I've got an EPIRB in my boating wish list on Amazon. Before I do my first trip over to Milwaukee or Chicago I will absolutely be buying one. Costs far less than a tank of gas.....seems silly not to.
