Has anyone tried E3 spark plugs in their 8.1? Changing plugs this season and was wondering if this was the way to go as my engines run rich and thought the "Diamond Fire" eletrodes might help by giving a more complete burn.

sounds like snake oil to me...I would be more concerned about why it was running rich - check you fuel pressure/entire fuel system

8.1 motors are really tough on plugs. I wouldn't risk using a gimmick plug on it. You would be better served imo to use a traditional plug and change it more often.

Running rich, if not addressed promptly, can be detrimental to your engines. start with testing fuel pressure. Possibly cool fuel module issues clogging fuel pressure regulator and causing excessively high fuel pressure.

1 Have the fuel rail pressures checked
2 Check you for leaking injectors
3 Have you done a leakdown test of the injectors
4 What plugs are showing too rich, suspect those injectors
5 Have the injectors removed and cleaned , only about $18 per.
Not that you need platinum since a regular plug does the same thing but you need to find out why its running rich. You can dilute the oil with too much raw gas also. There are 2 new plug designs in the works a "HEX" element and a "PENTA" element both will lighten your wallet LOL

Thanks for all the information, i will do the checks once she's splashed.

I agree with the above about fixing the running rich problem. Then run whichever plugs you like to change out every 100 hours.

Dasch, I had 8.1's in my 340 and I always kept running through the AC Delco plugs that were recommended for them. I finally tried a Champion 13 RS14YC6 recommended by my mechanic and they have lasted several seasons with NO PROBLEMS. In fact the new owner just replaced them recently and I wanna say they have been in the boat for 3-4 years with zero issues. Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the input, let me clarify, my engines run fine, they start right up pull to full RPM and idle without any misses or vibration. When I said she's running rich I mean that I detect a slight odor of unburned fuel when idling at the dock. I've seen E3 spark plugs advertised for the longest time and felt they would eliminate the issue as they claim to burn hotter. I'm about to start my fifth season on my current set of plugs which are the speced AC Delco items and as no one has tried the E3 plugs I'll stick with the AC's when I change them later in the spring.
