Hi folks,
I have a 1991 420 DA with a problem with the radio/ hifi speakers.
pretty straightforward one would think eh? Not so...
So, the radio unit is fitted onto the side of the deck sink unit, the one that 'used' to house the ice maker. There are a set of speakers upstairs, one either side of the radar arch, and another set under the couch downstairs. A switch at the helm allows you to switch-off the upstairs deck set whilst the set of speakers below still play.
So, the problem is that nothing is coming out of the speakers.. Any of them at all! This is also intermittent and infuriating! I have taken one of the speakers and connected it directly to the back of the radio unit, and it works fine... It would imply that there is a dedicated harness to this because the colour of the speaker wires are different at the speaker ends to the radio connection ends. I wonder if there is any link to the historical 'entertainment centre' which was removed years ago.. Or is there some kind of distribution switch / harness setup used?
I could just simply hardware the speakers with new dedicated cables, but I would like to resolve this... Has anyone any ideas of the cabling layout?

Sounds like there is an amplifier gone bad. If you have RCA cables coming from the radio, follow them. You will most likely find the amp

I'd love to know where it is.. If there is one. The cables either end (deck sink unit or empty entertainment centre in lounge) just disappear into the bodywork, ripped a few 'bit' out to try and find where they go, but with no general idea it could be anywhere.. Any ideas?

None of that is factory, so you are just going to have to chase the wires.

Just thought I would update this thread in case anyone else had a similar problem...
So I found the rougue 'device'. It was a kinda home-made audio filter. It was located behind the entertainment centre cutout, almost behind the right hand sliding cupboard, so you couldn't see it! I had to take out all of the wood fittings and strip it down. The speaker wires for the whole boat all run along there (STBD side just below the windows tucked behind the cupboards) which makes sense as thats where the original entertainment centre would have been.
Anyway, ripped it out and re-joined the wired as they would have been originally, and all back to normal.. in fact its only now that I realise there are also speakers in the bow cabin.. which were not working before.
