Official 280 Sundancer Thread

Your local department of transportation office should have a map showing overhead clearance for bridges and overpasses. I picked one up and keep it in the tow vehicle. I tow a 2004 280 with radar on a custom aluminum trailer. I measured the clearance by rolling the storage door down to the top of the radar and measuring both sides of the door to the floor. (obviously only one side should be necessary, but this is not a measurement to be read incorrectly). Your boat will be different than mine but 13 feet 2 inches is my measurement. I tow this around west Michigan and have checked clearance on all of the roads that I intend to use. The map in the truck is there in case of a detour. Honestly, I have more heartburn about low hanging tree branches than bridges and overpasses (which are almost always marked). I do not want to replace my arch, but would not be excited to remove it for towing. It seems like it may already be a potential location for rain intrusion. Just do your homework and it will be fine.

Does anyone know if all 2002 mercruiser 5.0 mpi b3 seawater impellers are created equal? I can't check for my motors serial numbers until spring. Thanks

Chris,

I'd be surprised if they are not, but impellers are easy to get and a lot of marine supplier stock them. You could call Merc and they could help. They are very user friendly.

Or you could look at a bunch of them online at Merc parts.

Yeah i almost ordered a couple of Impellers but they were only for the models that have the newer style brass/bronze pumps.

I actually wanted a BR or the SD when I was shopping over a year ago, but I found the good ones overpriced and the rest of them pretty rough. For my needs the 280 Sundancer is better and it was cheaper to buy than the others. I don't take big loads and love the occasional overnights. Great boat for the right mission. A lot of my friends have deck boats and bit pontoon boats and I'll let them haul all the drunks.

Thank you guys for the feedback. Appreciate it. I'll take a second look and make sure that it'll work for us and will also check out the 290s. I've thought about the sun decks also, but we really want a cabin.

Has anyone had to replace their steering wheel on a '03 280DA? The wood on mine cracked. I found this part # 1526292 in the manual and seems like every search ends at Great Lakes Skipper. I'm not sure how to cross reference it with their part numbers. I guess I could call them but wanted to see if anyone has any recommendations. Thanks in advance.

I own a 2006 Sundancer 280. I need to replace my cable (tv) from the tv to the stern. Has anyone else done this? I'm not finding any info on the internet.

Most have a keyed hub with 6-screws attaching the wheel to the hub. These are pretty universal. If just the wheel is bad, simply pop the center cap off and remove/replace 6-screws.

What are you trying to find? Is your cable broken or...?

The cable is broke. If I run cable directly from dock box to tv it works. When I hook it up to the stern box it doesn't.

might be the connection of cable to the fitting at the stern box is bad.....I would test the connections at both ends of the cable before running new cable.....cables don't normally just 'break' but fittings and connections can corrode over time.....

I never used my TV but I think there is a switch you have to flip when going from boat antenna to the shore cable. It's maybe in a cabinet I think or maybe behind the little sliding doors above the dinette.

RE: Removing seat backs for upholstery.

Can someone direct me how to remove the lounge seat back that raps around the seat, and the seat back between the loungs seat and the rear facing seat.

Often these are tricky with hidden screws. Thanks.

Also any issues with the captains seat?

I've replaced all the others and want the boat to look new.

Great post, would like more info on this. There are probably a lot of use that would like to get rid of the old TVs and get a new one working.

Threading a cable can be a *****.

Appreciate the responses

At what point does the anchor rope need replacing? My boat is a 2003 and the rope still seems ok, but I don't want to risk losing my anchor because of a rotten rope.

Nylon doesn't really rot or anything like that. But it can get worn from use. Looking at it and feeling it will pretty much tell you all that you need to know. The splice can get stiff... faster in salt water use (although that doesn't affect you). But you can wash/soak (in fabric softener) the rope give it new life if it's gotten stiff/crusty... The splice can be cut out and respliced... You can also turn the rope end for end. Point being, don't base the replacement on years - base it on condition. Find another place to spend some money - there usually is around a boat! Even if it's just for a new toy or gadget!!!

I went out to the shed and crawled in the boat. This is what I was talking about. It was behind the roll up door above the sink, cooktop, right hand side. Again I never used the TV except the kids watched videos on it. I don't know if this is the problem but the Glomex site says this,

A/B SWITCH When the knob is turned to the "A" input antenna, the amplifier is on. When it's turned on "B" it means that the input is from the dock of from another source, and that the amplifier is off.

Hi everyone thanks for having me. I'm in the market for a used 280 Sundancer 2007-2009 because we want more space then the 2010+ which are really older 260's? ..... Question do all the 280's in the 2007-2009 range come with twin screws? I really don't want the headache of twins. I'm a lake boater so I won't be doing any long trips and have to worry about range etc. I know I will loose maneuverability but...........My thoughts are two motors two headaches.....Please feel free to set me straight if my thinking is off.......
Are there any huge differences between the 07's-09's
Any year I should prefer over another and why?
I'll only be looking at fresh water boats

thanks for any and all replies
