I recently took delivery of a new SPX 21 and the speedometer stopped working. The "delivery captain" told me that it is a common problem because of weeds getting into the sensor that measures speed. I live and store my boat on a Central Florida lake where floating weeds are pretty common so his explanation makes sense.

However, even though I don't have much use for a speedometer on a boat especially when the tach works I would still like to have all the instruments working. Can anyone tell me where the sensor/tube is located on SPX21 with an inboard motor? If it is true that it gets clogged I would like to clean it out occasionally to prevent it from becoming permanently gummed up. Thanks!

Do you have an Alpha drive? If so there is a small hole on the leading edge of the outdrive. It can get clogged use a small price of wire or a plastic wire tie to clear it.

proper size drill bit, rotated by hand will draw the crap that's blocking it out with it

If this is going to be a perpetual problem I'd suggest a water proof case for your phone and a cheapo speedometer app.

Though if I spent the cash for a brand new boat I'm not sure how I'd feel about weeds consistently defeating the speedo. Weeds in water are not new problems...

Thanks for all the responses! I'll take a look and see if I can clear the blockage but to be honest it may not be worth the hassle. My boat stays on a lift in my boathouse so access to the prop area under the swim platform is not very convenient as my boathouse sits in about 9' of water. If I had to trailer my boat it probably would not be a big deal to clear that area when I took it out of the water but with my setup I don't think I will bother with it more than once.
