Official 280 Sundancer Thread

All,

What is the person capacity of the early 280 Sundancers? I've got a 2003 and cannot find any specs on capacity plate anywhere. Thought there would be a copy in the manual, but they only give examples, not the one I need.

It says the location is in the helm area or transom area on the hull, can't find it.

Could someone take a pix of one for me?

Yacht certified means no capacity limit.

Yacht certified means no capacity limit.

First, I don't believe the 280 is a yacht. I believe they start in the 31 foot area. And second, there's limits on all boats, vehicles, cars, trucks, and planes.

Think I found the placard for the 280, limit to 10 people, but not sure of the year.

I can't see 10 medium sized people on a 280DA being practical or comfortable. I never did more than 6 adults and a couple of kids and getting on plane with that load was a struggle,

Why do i see this designation like this sometimes on the web "sundancer 280/315".

I think you mean 280/310. The 280DA was rebadged in 2010 as a 310. Not the exact boat but similar enough. Sea Ray adopted the practice in 2010 of including the swim platform in the LOA.

Correct, or rather no stated limit.

It may not feel like a Yacht but it does carry the NMMA Yacht Certification. You can find lots of information on this. This certification starts in the 26' LOA and up.

Sea Ray used to have International "sister" model numbers that were closer to LOA. The US280DA was an International 315DA. Only difference was many of the International models had 220V vs 110V AC systems. Many international models also had Diesel engines. I'm not sure if Sea Ray abandoned this practice or not when they switched US model numbers to LOA in 2009/2010 to align with other brands.

Actually, the 280 & 315 are the same boat. The 315 DA is the European version of the pre-2010 Sundancer 280.

My '05 is the same as what geryb posted...10 folks max + stuff = 1,180kg max load.

Anyone ever tow their 280da with any kind of suv?

maybe a diesel Chevy Suburban or diesel Ford Excursion but even those might struggle with safely towing a fully loaded 280.....

Yeah, dude in Europe tows with a landcruiser. Says it handles it like its a toy.

you don't have to believe me.....post your question on the 'trailering' forum and I bet there won't be many posters on there that agree that this is safe......some guys that are regular posters on that forum have extensive towing experience so you will likely get very valuable input there.....

do you want to believe 'some dude in Europe' or someone that does this kind of stuff for a living?.....

What's your intended use ? Like how far, how often? Trailer brakes make a huge difference. I wouldn't be comfortable with a boat/trailer that weighs twice as much as my tow vehicle. If something happened and you did exceed the tow capacity of this SUV, I would assume you ain't covered and you would own all damages incurred

I think the tow capacity of a Toyota Landcruiser is around 8,000 lbs........the dry weight of a 280 is probably more than that alone....then you add the weight of the trailer and the genny (if equipped) and all the fluids and the 'stuff' that we all put in our boats and i bet a fully loaded 280 on a trailer could hit 10 - 11,000 lbs......pretty simple math says the Landcruiser is not a suitable tow vehicle for this boat no matter the distance.......

As others have stated... it's not a good idea to tow a 280DA with a regular SUV. In addition to the safety issues, you'd likely ruin the tranny and brakes on the SUV in no time.

Get yourself a Ford Super Duty pickup with a 21,000# towing capacity or a GMC Sierra 3500 with a towing capacity of ~15,000#.

Will be moving it twice a year. Will end up renting a truck but it would be nice to have an suv that could double as a family and boat hauler.

Anyone going to be in keywest for the suberboat international races? We're leaving in the morning.

Suburban 2500 or Excursion. Anything else would not be a good idea. Will it pull, probably but it wont be fun. Will it stop? Probably not. Handle well, be safe?- not a chance.

does anyone know distance between bottom of propeller and depth transducer. My boat is in water so i cant measure. Needed fir keel offset. I guessed 1.5 feet?
