Official 280 Sundancer Thread

I have 2005 280 with twin 5.0's. I can only get 3 quarts of oil out of each engine when changing the oil. I'm using a dipstick style hand pump while the boat is on the water in the boat slip. Doesn't seem normal to me but wanted to check with others.
All the boats I've owned had to have the oil changed with the dip stick tube and seems like being one quart shy is the case using this method. The tube can not go all the way to the bottom of the pan. Don't forget the oil filter has oil in it also.

The 3 quarts that I got out of the engine includes most of the oil that was in the filter as well. I'm wondering if I should get a different dipstick pump...maybe one that uses the plastic tube that goes into the dipstick tube so that I can pull the oil from the bottom of the oil pan.

You're right that you should be able to get about a quart more. The dipstick method is perfectly acceptable as the dipstick goes extremely close to the bottom of the pan. Using a little plastic straw doesn't get much more and it's really just a pain in the butt since it's so small (in diameter) and takes longer.

Possibly...
-- The boat is listing away from the dipstick tube?
-- The oil level was low to start with?

top deck fridge

has anyone installed a refrigerator below the sink on top deck of and o3 280 sundancer if so where did you get it and was it a big job ?trying to find one that would fit without too much cutting !

3 quarts is exactly what I get through the tube in the slip. I get 4 in the driveway using the drain hoses

Thank you scoflaw for providing me with both oil quantity methods! I was really surprised to not find this in the 280 thread when I searched.

FYI, it's not a "280" thing. It's simply a small block V8 thing. It doesn't matter what boat the engine is in - and it simply comes down to angles. You can also use the remote hose drain while in the water.

That isn't happening on a 280 with 5.0's

Sure can. Re-route the hose up the side (or back) of the engine and secure in an accessible position. If the tether is still attached to the drain plug, you won't be able to get to it while the boat is in the water to disconnect the two pieces - that will have to wait till a short haul. Unless you have access to someone pint-sized that can get down and under.

Seatrialed a 2002 280 with 5.0s and b3s and noticed some resonating through the whole boat at certain rpms while underway. Is this normal? Have only driven a vdrive boat before and thought that was more exclusive to those.

Is this because the b3 props were not installed correctly? Out of timing? Anyone ever put their b3 props on out of time?

This was more of an issue with the Blackhawk drive that had to have the props timed. I still, personally, do it on B3 drives (figure it can't hurt), but I've only ever heard of one or two instances where a B3 drive with "untimed" props equalled a vibration (have never personally verified it). I've been on plenty of B3 equipped boats that had untimed props but have never personally experienced it, though.

Its possible that the props have hit bottom a time or two and are out of tune. I would check them for damage. Even without visible damage they could still be out of tune which would cause vibrations especially when getting on plane.

Ok, so if I routed the hoses so that I can get at them from inside the bilge then what would I use to get the oil out? Would I pump it out? I don't think my hand pump has the same size end as the oil drain hose end piece.

Go to a local hardware store and ask for a "brass/bronze 3/8" pipe to barb adapter". Probably about $5. When you remove the plug that is in the end of the hose, the 3/8" adapter will screw right back in. Then, just make whatever size hose your current oil sucker has fit that 3/8" barb side (with a short length of 3/8" hose and barb adapter, if needed). I'm probably making it sound more complicated than it really is.

Hi there,
Does anyone know the model of the Norcold refrigerator is for the 2004 280DA? I'm looking to replace the door seals although I can't work on what model I have and where I can get seals for it. Any help would be appreciated.

Luke

Yeah, he just had them refinished and they "look" perfect. He also has a tie bar that connects both drives for some reason. Thought that was more of a gofast boat thing, for what i dont know.
