Hello my boating friends,

Does anyone know where to get a replacement handset for a Northstar 100SS VHF radio? The cord on mine has become brittle and is beginning to fall apart. The radio is working fine, but I do have some static when using it that I am assuming is because of the cord. This model has been discontinued based on speaking with my local Sea Ray dealership and replacement parts are not available. A similar replacement unit will cost ~ $1,200 with labor based on the dealer’s quote. What options do I have before my radio goes out completely in the future? Any information anyone could would be appreciated.

Previous owner replaced the handheld on my boat with a new one from the UK through Amazon UK I believe.

These cords are very difficult to come by. I did come across a seller on eBay that had just the cord for about $100 so you could graft it onto your handset. After looking at how the cord is attached to the handset, you would have to do some serious and delicate work to install the new cord. The wires are small and thin, and the cord is attached to the handset with heavy duty adhesive sealant. And you're still left with the rest of the radio that is old.

There are black box VHF radios available for way less than $1200 My solution was to install an Icom M400BB black box unit. It can be had for under $350. The main installation difference is that the Icom does not have an external speaker; the handset is the only speaker. I haven't been able to find a suitable flush mount speaker to fill in the hole that would be left by the Northstar speaker, so I just left it disconnected but in place.

The Icom unit was pretty easy to install, too.

I got an entire radio from a member here. All I needed was the coiled cord. Removing it from the handset was a bit of a challenge, but I did it and it works perfectly again. As stated above, the sealant/adhesive is tough. Finding a cord maybe even harder. The rest of the radio went to another member here that needed other parts.

Jennifer B.,

Thank you for the information. I will definitely consider your option should I be unable to locate just a replacement handset/cord for the original factory one.

Hi Bennett,

Hopefully, I am as fortunate as you and run across someone that has a used radio/handset that I can purchase from them. Yes, I am finding that locating just the handset/cord is going to be a challenging one.

I have a handset with cord for a Northstar NS-100 from my 2007 340 Sundancer. I replaced the Northstar radio with a Standard Horizon.I would be glad to sell for $75 plus shipping.

Hi Lonzie41,

Is the cord and handset in good condition? Would you mind sending me a couple of pics? How much do you think the shipping would be to south Louisiana?

Hi CSMady, sorry I did not reply sooner. I was away on a trip. Handset in very good shape, would send in U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail shipping box. You can get an estimate at your local post office for box appropriate size for the hand set. Can you give me text address to send pics

Thanks,Jay

It's amazing how Fu23ing Cheap people are these day's. I understand asking for Postage.... but asking for money for a POS Radio that has been replaced and is sitting in the Garage is Ludicrous!

You must not be familiar with the site "Craig's List" it happens there every day

Jay,

After research, I decided to purchase a portable hand held marine radio from Amazon for $80. I could not justify paying $75 plus shipping for a old cord and mike replacement part.

Hi all

I have just purchased a 2007 model 355 Sundancer, it has a Northstar 100SS but the previous owner threw away the mic/handset when it stopped working! So I too am in the market for a replacement mic/handset. I cannot see any on EBAY and just to add a further layer of complexity I will need it shipping to Australia!

Any suggestions on how to locate one of these much appreciated!

They are not made anymore nor support by the manufacturer. If it were me, buy a new radio.

Thanks bbwhitejr
I guess a new radio may well be on the cards, just trying to avoid cutting more holes in the dash really, and given that there is an otherwise serviceable radio in there I think it makes sense to at least attempt to source the part, but that may well prove difficult to the point of impossible by the looks of things!
