You just need a 12 volt supply. Car battery. Does this chart plotter have an internal antenna?

YES internal antenna....Can you explain please how it would hook up to a car battery?? what do i need to buy besides a car battery..
as you can tell we are not techie savvy:huh::huh:

When you install the GPS on your boat, you have to connect it to a 12 volt supply. I think that the wires on your GPS harness are Black for 12V- and Red for 12V+. Connect these 12 VDC wires to your car battery and you are good to go. If you are doing this in the off season, pull the battery out of your lawn mower if you have one.

Something to keep in mind, Bill, is that the antenna really won't work too well inside. You won't get an actual "fix", but you can still play around with it. A couple ways you can do this...

-- Use a battery jump pack (the new lithium ion ones are the size of a deck of cards!). Simply connect the red and black wires from the unit's power cord to the jump pack (there's many more wires in the unit's cable, but all you need is red and black). Or, like the Doc is mentioning, directly to the battery terminals of any 12V battery. Either way you go, just make sure you don't "cross the streams"! :smt001

-- Another way would be to get an inexpensive 12V power supply (Radio Shack) and you can go from your house's outlet to 12V.

FYI, if the kid doesn't want to wire the unit into the boat directly, get a cigarette lighter adapter plug - it's super easy to wire it to the units wires. Then, just use the boat's 12V socket.

If that unit has an internal antenna:
You can get a 110 volt wall plug to 12 volt adapter on Amazon or Ebay for around $10.00 or less. Just google it and you'll get a few choices.
You can also get a 12 volt plug that goes in to a cigarette lighter at either of those places, or any local Auto Parts store. Maybe even in the automotive aisle of Walmart. This plug will have a terminal for the positive (red wire) and negative (black, or possibly yellow) wire from your Garmin.
Plug the adapter in to the wall, hook up the wires from the Garmin to the 12 volt plug and then plug it in to the adapter.

Thank you all......ill be setting it up for him today.....Its a nice unit......by the time spring comes around in 2017 he will be
more knowledgeable thanks to you guys....

Again........Thank you.....
