Hello everyone, I bought my 2005 390 Motor Yacht in July and one of the issues the hull surveyor pointed out was how rough the hull was, apparently due to multiple years of minimal sanding before applying bottom paint by the previous owner. The marina that is doing my maintenance is suggesting the following during the commissioning process next spring:
- Hire a mobile soda blaster to remove all bottom paint, down to the gel coat
- Apply two coats of Interlux epoxy barrier coat, then sanding smooth
- Apply two coats of bottom paint; first a contrasting color trace coat and then black on top. I think my guy prefers Pettit Hydrocoat.
Does anybody have any experience with this? Any estimates on the cost?
I understand that modern Sea Rays use vinylester construction so blisters are not much of a problem on an aging boat, but it sounds like the barrier coat is a good idea to seal it and provide a good base for the anti-fouling paint.
