Is there a wrench or something to open the black screw on cap on top of
the Clorinator?? almost impossible to turn counterclockwise......When it was new?
NO PROBLEM.......:huh::huh:

I had to use a extremely large channel lock pliers to get mine off. I basically grabbed in-between the notches, not around the dia. Now I just don't tighten it that much. I am not sure if I tried the pool grease on the o-ring, but that might be an option.

I used a strap wrench similar to an oil filter wrench to free one for a customer. The silicone lubricant is a good idea also. Their not expensive. I purchased a cl220 for $60 with shipping. Might replace it if the lube doesn't work.

I tried the silicone lube from Leslies.Did nothing.. If you notice there are two screw holes on each side of the clorinator, what i did today was place the clorinator
on a 6" x18" x2" board and placed the clorinator in the middle of the board as so to leave room for my left and right foot. then screwed the unit onto the board using the screw holes that were used to hold the unit in place..
and was able to open it by standing on the board and un- screwing the cap.......YES! NOT tighting the cap is an idea as long as it doesen't leak.........

I deal with this every time I have to add chlorine:
There is a small hex head (also has slot) on top. Take that out and it releases some pressure. Then use a large channel lock to loosen the knurled top. With the hex head removed it will only take a little bit of pressure on the knurled top to get it loose.

I'm a new pool owner. (less than a month)

How do you guys manage the additional Cyanuric Acid (stabilizer) added to your pools by those tablets?

I never had a problem with mine when I owned a pool. I just barely snugged it up by hand. No problem for years.

Of course 35 years ago, things were built differently.

What you have is a Hayward CL200 or CL220 which use the same lid.
A company called Dura Grip has made a wrench to take the top off.
Google Hayward Chlorinator Lid / Cap Wrench and you will find one on for $15-$20.

Bill, instead of chlorination questions, shouldn't you be telling us about your new boat experience? Or have you not yet taken delivery?

I stabilize the PH (Acid level) when I open my pool for the season, then I use the chlorinator throughout the year and the PH level stays in range.

DONE.........Thanks much.......

I use the Hayward/Goldline salt system and would never go back to a chlorine system……we love it!

Our pool is solar heated........Does that make a difference between salt and chlorine ??

I don't think heating it would matter which you use.
Do you use those solar panels that get mounted on the roof to heat it?
I've though about adding them, but our pool is only an above ground and now that the kids are getting older they really don't use it anymore. Mostly seems like we just keep it so I have something else to clean and maintain.
If it were up to me it would be long gone, but my wife insists we keep it even though she hasn't been in it in 4 or 5 years. She claims that if it were heated she would use it more often. I've resisted making the investment because I don't believe her.

We have 10. 8'x12' solar panels on the sunny afternoon side of our home, our pool is 16" x 40' and the panels do a great job
We thought about salt but never followed up....

Depending on your Admiral and your HOA, I have a butt ugly, yet very effective and efficient solar heater diagram/plan.
