Do you leave your top hatch open while running at cruising speed?

We really got mixed opinions, now need to decide what to do or not do ... Definitely do not want to experience what hapenned to ASH.

@Sandydlc: I prefer to keep the hatch lock and close but the admiral insist to leave it open to let the fresh air in and cool down the cabin. You know, usually the admiral always have the last word!

I guess it really depends on where you boat. If we're out on the Puget Sound, we will often take at least one wave over the bow. Just not worth the fresh air to risk getting salt water inside our boat. In fact, I don't think we've opened our forward hatch since we've owned the boat!

If it was me, I would recommend having the hatch open only at slow speeds.

Hope the Admiral has a paycheck coming in... For when you snap that hatch in two, she can buy the replacement hatch and that'd be the end of this discussion!

I'm not lucky enough to be running in water smooth enough to consider leaving open at cruise speed

Hey IanBat - any news from Rob in Australia? I was following his thread and then all updates just stopped a couple of months ago. Hoping he's okay.

Used to like to have it open about 1-2" are cruising speed on my 280 with the thumb screws locked in but the Admiral always wanted it locked closed. One day, returning from a boys weekend, we hit an unexpected chop exiting a pass and the hatch flew violently open. Both struts snapped and the hatch completely flipped all the way over and smashed to pieces on the deck. Ended up taking me about 2 months before we could get it repaired properly to OEM spec. Admiral wasn't impressed. From then on I always cruised with it closed and locked at cruise speed, apparently that's a good idea.

I have had this discussion way too many times with my wife, the first mate. I simply cruise with the ac on all of the time and she has nothing to complain about. That way everyone's happy, even our lab butts his nose against the glass at times when it gets too hot and wants to go in the cabin. Spoiled little pup!

In South Florida I usually keep it open if there is a slight wind, did this recently and had the tension bar bend on me!, does anyone know where to purchase replacement? I believe this is a Taylor Made product?

I believe I got mine from a place called Boulder boats in Colorado but that was about 6-7yrs ago, I had sourced it through eBay.
