OK, the Gorilla has the kid. PETA thinks I should haul in more food than the gorilla could possibly eat in a sitting and maybe it would leave the kid. They think maybe a bunch of guys should try to intimidate the gorilla to back it off. They think it could be stuck in the ass with a big dart full of tranquilizer and then it would lay down for a snooze a few minutes later.

I like the gorilla but I’m not going to gamble on anything that might further stir him up. The kid could be in pieces in seconds….I’m going to take the head shot, what do you guys think?

There was only one choice if you wanted to keep the kid alive for certain...head shot.

I can't even believe this is being debated the way it is. Head shot. Only viable option here. The issue I have with the Zoo is safety. Now, an adult can figure out many way to be stupid. The layout should never be such that a child can climb into a pen like that...

**** the gorilla. So now they're more important than a human life?

I can't believe the way people are bashing the parents of the child and the zoo staff for this whole thing.

PETA and other groups are up in arms over the gorilla being shot. They're wanting everyone from the cops to Congress to investigate this whole thing. And, of course, they want to hang the "guilty parties" for shooting that gorilla.

C'mon man, get a fricking grip. That was a defenseless human being in there with the gorilla. Shooting it was the only reasonable thing that could have been done.

The parents have already apologized for their kid getting away. Apparently he climbed a 3' fence and ran across a flat area around the gorilla area. As he ran he tripped and slid down into the water.

I watched the video and it looked like the gorilla was treating the kid like it was its own baby. That's understandable. It looked like the gorilla was agitated by the yelling and screaming by the people on the top. He dragged the kid away from the noise and out of sight of the video camera I saw. This is going to cost the parents from all the ridicule and harassment they are going to get, and the poor kid is going to be linked to this for the rest of his life.

I feel sorry for everyone involved in this whole sad event.

The Zoo can't win on this one - odds where the gorilla would have killed the kid. Maybe by some miracle they could have gotten the kid out, but imagine the backlash if the kid was killed in the process. The zoo had no choice, their only play was to kill the gorilla. People don't understand, even in a zoo, these are wild animals, they are not mean or vicious, just the way mother nature made them. Animals don't think and reason like people, they simply act on instinct.

The kid was being a kid, the gorilla was being a gorilla and something bad happened.

If you are shopping in Target and your kid gets loose and knocks over a TV on display you will owe Target for the cost of the TV because your child is your responsibility. I have no problem with the sacrifice of the gorilla to save the child. I do think that the responsibility lies on the parents. You can't idiot proof everything. The parents made a mistake that nearly ended up in an incredible tragedy. Fortunately their lesson did not cost them the life of their child. This was an avoidable accident but it was still just an accident due to the poor supervision of the parents.
I am a father of a very energetic and curious 3 year old. This story still makes me shiver. I hugged my son extra hard after I heard about this story.

Does anyone shop at Target? If so, what bathroom or changing room do you use?

Gorilla immediately no question. The zoo had a response for this situation and they did not hesitate. There must be multiple barriers in place to keep a person from gaining access to the area. I would suspect human error on the zoo's part contributed to this situation at some level. Time will tell.

Save the endangered gorilla.... Too many humans as it is.

Burgundy, I sense sarcasm....

At the moment a human life (defenseless child no less) is in the hands of a gorilla, the only choice is the headshot. I believe if you think differently, your moral compass is broken.

Just because the results of the decision are very, very unfortunate, it does not make it a difficult choice for me. Save the kid.

I really do feel bad about the gorilla but I'm thinking you might have only one chance at it. I think the gunshot would give you the best shot at success.

The idea of sending several men in to intimidate it is scary. I'm sure it's possible sometimes but what if the gorilla says 'boys, I ain't havin' none of that sh-t today'...they'd still be trying to match arms and legs to torso's.:smt043

My son is 2, if he had fallen in that Gorilla would have been begging for a tranquilizer.

Taking out out the gorilla, no brainier. Responsibility here goes to parents and the zoo. Sad situation all around.

We are numb as a society. This makes global headlines yet 8 dead and 57 shot in Chicago is just another weekend.

Woody thanks for posting you have made my moral compass spin like a tilt-a-whirl.

Two of my boys work at the Cincinnati Zoo. One is an animal handler (small safe ones) was there that day and heard the kill shot. The other was out of town but he works security. This week has been crazy. Since the Zoo is private they can keep the press out. The press keeps trying to sneak in and interview visitors and staff.
