As the title states..

AED.. Automatic External Defibrillator how many of you carry one?

Reason I ask, my wife was a cardiac nurse at a local hospital (now a supervisor) advised we should have one on the boat at all times, which i agree with..

can be used in the case of a heart attack.. think this scenario.. your miles offshore and the closest help is at least an hour away..

I myself had a heart attack in 8/14 while out on the water, and was extremely lucky to have survived my ordeal (widow-maker 100% blockage in LAD).
in many cases most people (95%) DON'T survive past 2 hours of onset of what i had..

a defibrillator in many cases can save a life.. be it yours, or a passengers..

For my next boat I'm hoping to go longer distances and this is a piece of safety equipment we will likely have onboard. Right now we don't tend to overnight with too many guests onboard and we're still in our 30's.

There are are always vendor selling them at the FLIBS and I think any piece of safety gear is a good idea.

Ouch - but a small price to pay if anyone on your boat has a heart attack (and risk factors).

I found a site that claimed to have the lowest prices, but I'd say the average was $1,199 with the highest one I saw being $2600 or so. None were less than $1,100.

My wife found the one we are keeping on board for around $700 shipped..

Refurbished and re-certified!

company based out of NY..

remember this is just to help in an emergency, until you get to the Coast Guard, EMS, or even a hospital..

its small only weights 2.4pounds, and does what you need...
that is help bring your heart back into rhythm..
or possibly shock it back to life..

people often confuse heart attack (MI),
<heart beat irregular, raised, and/or out of sync.. (laymen terms),>

and Cardiac Arrest, stops beating all together..
<needs to be restarted..>
sometimes shocks AND manual chest compression (CPR) are needed...
this is the most dangerous

not saying this will definitely save a life.. but it will increase that persons chances 10 fold

I carry two pediatric epi pens for allergic reactions but no aed, my wife is an emergency room nurse.

Fits in our first aid kit

Great idea for an epi-pen.
I'll ask my wife if she can get one.

The AED is a great tool to have, but realize that it only will shock if the heart is in fibrillation.
That is, from what we're taught at our work CPR class that we take yearly.

If you need it, it's the best darned $700 you've ever spent in your life. If you never need it... well... you're doing pretty good there, as well!

It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Why on earth would one bother to spend the money and time on something they never want to use. A boater could just buy more beer...

NOT!!!

This is one of my favorite threads I ever started. It shows a stark contrast between the Alpha's with an in charge be prepared attitude and the "I'll call for help when I need it crowd but it will never happen to me".

I've looked into these. There are a couple of units that actually communicate with the local hospital about vitals, other metrics. You need to find out what kind of compatibility the AED has with the hospital. There may be a standard at this point.

What you are talking about are semi automatic defibs. Yes, they only shock if they detect a convertible rhythm, which is aortic fibrillation. As for epi pens, theyre great if you need one, make sure and keep them "fresh" in date, and they usually need to be kept from heat. If theyre visually cloudy, get a new one.

We have the heartsine units at home, and one on the boat. Same with the epipen. "Regret Minimization"

It's possible that some of the "non-alphas" boat in waters where there is plenty of medical attention available. For instance, here in Clearwater where I boat a simple VHF or 911 emergency call will bring medically trained professionals to my boat within minutes. I could also be at one of the local boat ramps in minutes to meet a fully trained staff of medical professionals who would know exactly what to do with my ailing passenger.

Who carries a tracheostomy kit on board? Sometimes the Heimlich maneuver fails to clear the blockage?

That sounds a whole lot like the "I'll call for help when I need it...".

The trach kit is a good idea.

A few things to keep in mind..
In most states you need to be certified to operate even the simplest AED and if the person using it is not, and the victim dies, that opens a "world of legal problems. And if you are the only certified person on board and you have the heart attack what help will the AED be.

food for thought before shelling out $1000.00 + especial if you are not voyaging offshore where helps may be hours or days away
