Guns on your boat

Its easy to cherry pick articles and videos on both sides of this issue. The bottom line is if you don't agree with the second amendment, don't buy or have a gun.....no problem. Leave the rest of us alone, we don't disparage you, give us the same respect.

Damn us LEGAL gun owners can ruin someone's day, I'm sure the teens meant no harm

It happened again. Another insecure guy with a concealed carry permit.

No boats in either of these stories  It seems like we're dead in the water (pun) in our search for articles where an armed boater saved the day.

Don't believe anyone here is disagreeing with the 2nd amendment. We're talking guns on boats. How necessary is carrying one for you to enjoy your time on the water

Wallet, check. Phone, check. Keys, check. Gun, check. I'm not sure why you are in disbelief. If your carrying a gun, it'll wind up on your boat.

It's much safer on your person than in a safe in your car that could be stolen.

What exactly am I in disbelief of ?

We boat in Washington, BC and Alaska. We have never had the need of a gun. All you people that carry guns have you ever had to use it? If yes what was the reason?

I do not carry on my boat, but had a friend carrying one day when a group of drunken gentleman tried to board while we were on it, with the intent to do harm to us (there were 5 of them and 2 of us). They thought better of it after my friends stance changed...

The short story is these guys were piss drunk and confused us for someone else (we hadnt left the boat) who had been hitting on their women and were carrying bottles looking to start something. Im not about to go 2 on 5 when they are armed with bottles and I have just my fists.

When I boat Lake Norman, I may or may not have a weapon onboard. No real need on LKN. As was said, if I have my pistol aboard (on LKN) it's because I had it with me, and didn't want to lock it in the truck.
When I boat the coast, I may or may not have it with me. Depends on the area of the coast I'm going.
If I boat in Florida, specially South Florida and the Bahamas, I will have a pistol and shot gun aboard, for obvious to me reasons. I'm sure, not all Florida boaters feel the same as I do, but then they have the right to have one or not. Doesn't bother me which path they choose. I have had the occasion that my comfort level was low because of a situation happening on the docks. It comforted me to know if necessary, I could defend myself if necessary. I don't know if that makes me a crazy nut case, but I feel better having one and NOT needing it, rather than the other way round.

Depends on if it's needed in a bad situation. As has been mentioned numerous times it usually not needed. But to have and not need is far better than not have and need.

In following this (very long) thread it seems to me the answer depends on your intention and personality. If your intention is just to repel and protect you and yours then you will know you can do that with pepper spray, wasp/hornet spray, flares, etc. If, however, you are the type who is not comfortable unless you are able to inflict fatal injury then you should certainly carry a deadly weapon.

This is ridiculous.

Bring pepper spray to a gun fight? Cops carry guns for a good reason. Why do I carry a gun...well I can't carry a cop!

Kind of like a rape victim peeing herself to prevent the rape? I don't think so.

That's all most people are capable of doing and that is okay with me (as long as they are not my immediate family).
