Hello all! I just purchased a 2005 340 SD and have to replace the Reverse Cycle CruiseAir 12,000 BTU 115V/60 Phase 1 unit. I have received several quotes but before I buy the same BTU unit, has anyone replaced theirs with a smaller unit?

I was thinking that a smaller unit would be a big cost savings, but only if it can do the job to cool and heat the cabin without working to hard and being undersized.

I know boat AC units are different from home units, but it seems like 12,000 BTU's are a lot for the cabin of the 340 SD. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.:smt001

Thanks,
Rob

Why in the world would you go smaller? If anything get a 16000 if you have a 12 it will work less. Here is where I got my replacement and it has a heat strip in it. http://www.flagshipmarine.com/ Give Tom a call. He can give you expert advise. I had a 16 in my 340 and I replaced it with a 20.
Even in FL in the summer it will come to temp and shut down.

+1. Go bigger if you can. It will be more efficient. The cost difference between units is only a couple hundred dollars.

I have my original 9K btu with reverse heat in my 290 and here in Florida it cools quickly to the low 70's and reaches my cutoff point at 62* a couple of hours after that. :)
I like it cold when I sleep!

P.S.
I can run my AC using eco mode on my Honda 2000

I am in the process of replacing my 16000 Cruisair unit. I considered flagship, but ended up going with a replace Cruisair unit. The updated model has tremendous advances like smaller size and weight, along with quieter operation.

I would stay with the same size that SR chose when they designed the boat. My concern with a smaller unit is the impact on duty cycle. Would you be shortening overall life with it running more frequently or more often?

At least its in an easy place to get to.

Mark

Stick with the same size there is no insulation in a boat. Depending on how long you boat in a season, you may want to consider a Flagship. The reverse cycle can only draw heat from water to a certain low temp.
