I'm thinking of mounting my dinghy on the swim platform using weaver davits. The only problem is it's a documented vessel and having the dinghy on the platform will block the name. Does anyone do this and have a good workaround. I could put the name on some starboard or something and drape it over the dinghy, but curious if anyone has other suggestions or pictures of similar setups?

I rarely saw this until this summer when we started the loop. The trawler community seems to have quite a few ways to cover that. I've seen it painted on the bottoms, vinyl graphics on the bottoms, names elsewhere on the boats that can be seen when the dink is on the back, etc. Search the trawlerforum.com for that, bet you get lots of examples
Merry Christmas

I have seen the boat name on the bottom of the tender with "TT/Name". I don't know about legalities, but if you are obeying the laws, you should be ok.

I would also suggest painting your boat name on the bottom of your dinghy!

It is NOT recognized as official name and/or hailing port if printed on the dinghy. I have never heard of the CG giving anyone a citation for their dink covering their vessel name.

This actually happened to a friend in NY harbor. He was stopped going North and given a warning and instructions to have the name issue corrected immediately. He was stopped again, in the same place on his return trip 3 days later, (by the same official as luck would have it) and issued a summons because he did not comply as instructed. Admittedly, the official was being a real PIA and being overly officious, but rules and laws are rules and laws.

Also, my friend has a tendency to speak his mind and it would not surprise me if he said something to cause the official to write him up. Sometimes it is just better to be quiet and accept what you have coming.

I've not heard of covering your name and hailing port being a problem....but, yea guess it's like covering your cars Licence plate.

Same idea and more important in my opinion, is to ensure not to cover your transom nav light.

Thanks all. Not sure if an issue or not, but would rather not find out as it seems like a fairly easy fix. Also, citations aren't the only issue, if someone needed to hail us, it would be quicker with a visible name. Painting the dinghy sounds ok, but will wear off. I'll take a look a the trawler forum.

Most boats I see with tenders or dinghies on the swim platform have the name covered, (mine does and I never thought about it) and while you may or may not get a summons for covering the name your main concern (on a 290DA and similar boats) is you are covering the stern light. And that is a navigational hazard. and that will get you a ticket. You can get around this by turning on the anchor light on your mast, but again you need to make sure it is visible for 2NM for your size boat. Make sure you completely cover the existing transom mounted stern light as not to bleed light to the sides.

I've wondered the same thing about the name and the dinghy. I've not had a problem on my current boat. In your case, I'd be careful as your boat pushes the limits of documentation. At 10500 it meets the criteria but visually it doesn't. I would suspect that local authorities would want to see a reg. on it, as most boats like yours do. Don't be surprised if the lack of numbers results in educating the authorities. I had a 30' Alura I did that with. I was questioned once by the police and was let go. A month later I had to prove to the state I paid sales tax. Coincidence? I bet not.
