Drunk. High. And a sea ray (Multi-page thread 1 2)

What a bunch of maniacs. Associating a certain brand with that kind of behavior is ridiculous. We are young (28/29), own a sea ray, and you wouldn't catch us blasting techno music at any point during the boating season.

If we were to stereotype I'd have to put it more on the go fast fountain type, in our area those are the loudest and most obnoxious owners by far. The cruiser crowd anchors in a cove and keeps quiet for the night, generally.

"I own a Sea Ray and kind of have to agree with you there on the Sundancer perception.
We spent the weekend at a marina that is on an island that is part of a state park system. We were one of 6 boats there with 5 of them being Sea Rays.

Of those 5, there were three Sundancers. One was owned by an older couple, but the other two were owned by couples in their mid to late 40's. Both of these boats we heavily lit up with all of the latest LED lights in blue and red and the music was thumping away.

This leads me to believe that there may be some validity with the Sundancer identification. Interestingly enough they were both from Long Island originally so maybe it's a coincidence.

We've had this discussion in the past many times on THT but I stand firm in the fact that not all Sea Ray owners fall into the idiot category, particularly if those Sea Ray owners operate a larger sedan bridge or aft cabin."

So are you equating that younger folks with Sundancers are more obnoxious than older folks with Sedan Bridges? That's quite a leap.

The fact of the matter here is that Sea Ray is the most popular brand in the market with the most units in the water in any given area. More boats equal more jerks. Any ass with a little money can buy a boat and be obnoxious in it. It's not a brand issue and definitely not a style of boat issue. It's a jerk off with more money (or the illusion of more money) than sense issue. Regardless of age.

No, what I am equating is the perception that is given.

We already know as a cross section that younger boaters typically have more obnoxious tendencies (but only because they are younger and older people have learned from doing obnoxious things when they were younger.) This is the same reason why you get a discount on your car insurance when you turn 25.

I'm 39 and my wife is 37. She has co-workers in their 20's that she enjoys working with but we don't socialize with due to differences in attitudes when it comes to what is considered "fun" or obnoxious.

As you said it's a popular boat. The perception is that idiots run them. I was providing a sampling of my own personal experience. 5 Sea Rays. 3 of them are of the Sundancer variety. 2 of the Sundancers met the perception.

For that particular weekend 83% of the boats in the marina were SR. 50% of them were Sundancers. Of the Sundancers that were in the marina 66% of them met the perception. Of course as I mentioned those two were both from Long Island so maybe it's 100% the perception of Sundancer owners from Long Island.

This is not to be construed as a blanket statement towards Sea Rays or people from Long Island.

From another THT post -
"Because some people would rather make excuses...

Yep, I own a Sea Ray. I also own two other boats, one of which is a jet boat set up for wakeboarding (that my oldest son thinks is a fishing boat) I guess that makes me an idiot in some peoples eyes.

In the two years that I have owned the Sea Ray I have put more than 250 hours on the engines. Do we spend some weekends just sleeping overnight on it still tied to the dock? Yep. We also use the heck out of it.

I spent 16 days in the Abacos on it with my wife and boys this past summer. For those who bash; what did you do with your family this summer?

You can make memories or you can make excuses..."

I agree with Zorba(Alex). Sundancers are the most popular express cruisers out there, so density of boats with the same percentage of jerks equals higher density of jerks. My wife and I are... well lets just say "Over 50" and moved to the dark side two years ago. We do not run our generator after 8PM (and its pretty quiet). We do not anchor right next to other boats, and play music loud enough to hear on shore. We do not go on deck naked, or poop off the swim step, to encourage other mariners to keep their distance. I have not found Sundancer owers to be any more prone to annoying behavior than other boat types, or manufacturers. THT has a lot to say about Sea Ray and it is usually unflattering. Comparing Sea Ray to "Real" Fishing boats, or more "upscale" cocktail yachts. As my wife and I came from the world of sail, with extensive coastal experience, and I chose Sea Ray Sundancer, THT would have you believe that I am not a very good judge of boats, and this thread leaves me with the whole Ugly person on the Bus problem.

A target on THT.

For what it's worth I also own a 23' Yamaha Jet Boat. That boat and it's owners have also been bashed pretty good on THT. Come to think of it, since I've been on that board I don't think there is a manufacturer who is immune.

There are some good comments in this thread though -

THT is quite good at bashing SR. If you don't own a center console and boat on the east coast from the Carolinas south and fish the the stream every day then you are an inferior boater.

I'm sticking with my argument that style has nothing to do with it and brand saturation has everything to do with it. In my neck of the woods there are obnoxious folks from all ends of the age spectum. I will concede most are sea Ray, but that is because more than 50% of boats in any given marina or anchorage are sea rays. I would imagine that the ratio of dancer to sedan is 5 to 1.

Hold on there! I am mid-50's with a 410DA that has colored led lights and a stereo that pushes waves away from my boat. We are respectful of other boaters, practice safe boating and have a good time with good CLEAN fun. There is a guy on here from Canada that has a 400DB that has huge parties and hot girls in small bikinis. Does that make him a bad guy?

I have owned 2 Sundancers, 280 and 320, and now own a fishing boat, Tiara. I think the perception of singling out one type of boat to be obnoxious is just incorrect and just plain ignorant. Why can't people that enjoy the same 'basic'activity just get along? On our dock, we have sportfishing boats, trawlers, Sundancer cruiser, and sailboats. In our group, we all get along and help each other regardless of type of boating we do or type of boat we own. It just doesn't matter as we all enjoy each others company and respect the choice they have made in name brand. Is my boat better equipped than other for fishing? Of course it is. Are other boat better equipped at other aspects of boating than mine, of course they are. Does that mean just because you don't go offshore and fish that your type of boat is inferior? Of course not.

Everyone enjoys something just a little different and that is ok. I am sure if that moron in the article owned an other brand of boat the results would have been basically the same. You just can't fix stupid. It is true that alot of people start with SeaRay simply because of market share.

We party hard on our dock with music loud and dancing on the dock and people onn other docks get pissed at us for it. Hell we have 25 people dancing having a good time and they call the marina at 6:30PM to complain. We never go past the noise ordinance. So for them, I am sure the fishing crowd is the most annoying to them.

I wouldn't take much into that post, not ever sure why is was posted the way it was except to incite an arguement. It seems that nowadays, some people want everyone to conform to one way of life? If you don't do what I like, I will complain and ***** until you conform to my way of thinking. If you don't like loud music and know they are going to be in a certain area all night partying, then don't go there, pretty simple to me.

Ever notice that people that spend their time constantly bitching about what other people do are generally unhappy with a lot of aspects of their own lives?
Some points valid, but mostly alot of guys who walked uphill both ways to school if you know what I'm sayin......

But that being said, maybe I should get rid of my "F__k you if you dont own a Sea Ray" t-shirt?

North shore, do you have any extra t-shirts?
Seriously, I have a Sundancer, that I love, and do not fit their stereo-typical mold. I will however run my Genny, because when it's 90 degrees at night in South Georgia, who doesn't?

I'm not a fan of stereotypes and generalizations. With that said, everyone on THT are redneck douche bags.

Ah its just internet crap. You have that same bickering back and forth from BMW and Porsche owners. I think most of those guys over there are just fine folks if you take the scarcasm out.

I'm 33 with a 540DA. Does that make me a douche or arrogant?!?!?! Or am I in between and suffer all the above?
