Sorry for the delay, yes the 400 Express is much smaller than your 390, we also looked at the 400 before buying the 420.

Hello everyone,
Santa gave me a 1988 390 EC for being a good boy.
Have all kinds of ideas about upgrades. Its been great reading all that you folks have done.

winter project
looking to upgrade to dripless

does anyone know the size?
I know its 1.5 but what is the size of the stern tube?

thanks

Happy New Year fellow 39ers ,
Saverio , I am thinking about a dripless upgrade as well .
The measurements I have for my 1990 390 are : Drive shaft Dia. 1.50"Stern tube 3.50"

Do you have a dripless manufacturer in mind ? I have been looking at Tides Dripless seals.
Any recommendations ?

I replaced the shaft packing with Gortek packing 3 years ago. There is very little if any dripping from the shafts. As well as the Gortek works I would never spend the money for drip less system.

From what I have been told drip less need maintenance too. I have heard of them going bad and leaking real bad.

I've owned this boat since 2008 & have not done anything with them. They were already on the boat when I bought it, so I have no idea how old they are. They could be original to the boat for all that I know. I will have to check my files for the build sheets to see if it was an option at that time. I suppose that like everything else, they will either wear out or require some sort of maintenance. In the meantime, I have a dry bilge so I am not complaining about this dripless system.

One of the advantages of the Tides seals is that they will not fail badly. The PSS seals have had some major failures when the collar slips forward or the spring that maintains pressure on the mating surfaces weakens over time allowing water to enter between the mating surfaces. My 390 has the old style Tides seals. They were in the boat when I bought it 5 years ago and have never leaked during that time. I still have the spare seals in place waiting for the day I need them. I would not use any other brand.
