A family dog killed a toddler at 2700 state Route 12B in the Oneida County Town of Marshall.

Sheriff Robert M. Maciol says Lisa M. Cittadino, age 32, called 911, Sunday saying that her 11-month old son had just been attacked by the family dog and she was attempting to render first-aid.

Cittadino said the family dog, a 2-year-old pit-bull named Diesel, was in the living room playing with her three daughters, ages 12, 10 and 7 and the 11-month old son when the dog attacked.

Cittadino stated that her back was to the children when she heard her son screaming along with her daughters and turned around to see Diesel was attacking her son.

She said she frantically tried to get the dog to release its grip. Once she was finally able to do that, she secured the dog, Maciol said.

The boy was immediately taken by Oriskany Falls Ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Utica, NY where he died as a result of injuries to his neck and face.

The dog was taken into custody by the Town of Verona Animal Control Officer and is going to be euthanized at the request of the family. Cittadino stated that there have been no previous issues with the dog being aggressive with the children over the past 2 years that they The children said the boy was near the dog’s food dish and that may have precipitated the attack.

The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified and an autopsy of the toddler will be conducted.

The family has been offered counseling.

I'm so sorry for the pain that is going to be felt in your family.Professional help in dealing with something like this should be considered for your love ones. The pit bull breed by no fault of it's own has been turned into a very unstable animal because of selective breeding.

O-M-G! That's horrible....sooooo sorry to hear this, Wayne. Prayers are going out to you and your family...especially your nephew, his wife and kids. Tragic. You have your CSR family here for you.

Holy crap! That is terrible news Wayne. Our thoughts are with your family during this brutal time. I can't even imagine but that dog would never have made it to the pound if it were me!

Wayne, you and your family are in our prayers. I know that words seem empty but will be thinking of all of you.

Wayne, I can't even come up with the words to express my sadness. I am so sorry to read this and I just want to reach out to you and the family.

That's horrible Wayne - I'm so sorry to hear it.

People tend to ignore or mis-understand very simple clues about dogs. They're pack animals. That means they hierarchical and must be at the bottom of a family "pack". People also tend to mis-understand what that means to the dog. Dogs don't necessarily want to be alpha, but their instincts kick-in when they see a pack without a clear alpha or established hierarchy. That's stressful for the dog and results in undesirable and often mis-diagnosed behavior. A dog who understands his place in the pack is much more likely to be happy and well-adjusted than one who believes he's responsible for leading a family.

If anyone reading this has any doubt about their dog having any doubt about their placement in the pack, please google terms like "recognizing dominant behavior in dogs" or "becoming alpha over your dog."

It's interesting reading, and could literally save a life.

p.s. I'm not a dog expert - I just read and watch a lot about dog behavior. (and one of the most kind, gentle and loving dogs I know is a Pit)

Terrible news Wayne, thoughts and prayers go out to you and family.
My daughter and boyfriend have a Pit Boxer mix, very lovable dog but add a baby to the family and you never know, it's scary!

I actually had a pit bull go for my throat when I was 15. Poor dog was so confused when I caught him by the face, slammed his head into the ground and was ready to finish the job when the owner came to rescue it. Dumb creatures that revert to instinct and can become very aggressive. I keep an eye on them when in close proximity to this day. I was lucky and walked away with a nip of my chest.

very sad news. sorry to hear this
