Hi there,

Just bought a brand new dealer demo 540 da.

Beautiful boat but just have a few minor issues I need to sort on it. Sea Ray isn't getting back to me. Hope you guys can help.

Stern and anchor lights are out. The bulbs don't have any voltage or wattage indicators or lettering on them. Does anyone know what I should get? They're all blown so can't test for resistance to work out.

Microwave and gpo outlet underneath it doesn't work. Does anyone know how I get to the back of the units or get them out to check? ( yes I've checked breakers etc)

Bose accoustimass in salon doesn't work. Need to find out where it plugs in. The power cable isn't getting power..

The Bose unit in the v berth doesn't get any power either. Any ideas where I can access the plug? Have checked the surrounding areas and access panels - can't see any plugs.

Have some raymarine cameras onboard connected to e125 screens but they flicker like crazy! Whether engine or gender is on, they flicker.

Hope you can help!

Congrats on the purchase and good luck with her! Also, welcome to CSR. I don't have your boat, but hopefully I can offer some general information that may help you.

For the 110volt items that are not working, have you tried resetting the GFI breakers on the outlets themselves? Sometimes a GFI breaker trips and half of the outlets on the boat won't work. Since I don't know that model boat, I would suggest that reset the breakers on all assets you can locate, and look for other outlets that you don't know about. Look into cabinets and lockers for extra outlets, one of them could have GFIs that could be tripped.

I would also also look for a blown fuse on the running light circuit possible under the dash after the switch.

the camera flicker could be coming from a bad ground. You could try tracing the cables to see where the power supply comes from and check them.

These may not be the answers, but hopefully they can help you get a start.

Congrats on the new boat! For the Bose system. The subwoofer is what needs to be powered up or else nothing works. Make sure both the sub and the DVD player are powered up.

Thanks for the advice guys!

H_ gerry - have checked gfi - everything else on those circuits work. Must be the powerpoints that they connect to. Might have popped out or something.

All the fuses seem fine. Weird thing is the running lights up the front still work fine. They're also on the same circuit as the stern and anchor light. It's weird that they would just blew all at the same time. Any other ideas?

Will check the earth on the cameras.

Humph - the DVD player seems to be playing fine, there's no power to the sub though. Just can't find where it plugs into

Thanks again guys

I cant help with any of your problems....but I'd love to see some pictures of your new boat!

I have a 2010 540 so I'm going to assume they have a similar setup. For all the entertainment equipment that is setup in the rack behind the glass doors, the best access is from the breaker panel. The whole breaker panel is hinged. Remove the screws around the 12 volt breaker side and then all the breakers will hinge open together. You have pretty good access then to the Bose, satellite, and outside stereo equipment.

Let me know if you have other questions I can help with...

if the othe nav lights work, you may very well have multiple bad bulbs. Stranger things have happened. Get a few spares and take a look. Use a digital voltage meter to check power at the build connections. If no power, I would check for power at the base of the light pole at the socket, if you have one. Then keep going back towards the switch tracing the wires as you go. You never know where a splice or connector in the wiring may have gone bad or been pulled out. Also the switch could still be the issue if it has multiple legs from the same switch (multiple wires in and out of multiple terminals on the switch itself).

The 540DA has four systems 240v A/C 120v A/C 24v DC and 12vDC

The heavy power consumers run off the 240 side the fridge, freezer, washer, ice maker and all the electrical outlets are 120v. for the microwave look in the upper cabinets for the GFI outlet. Sea Ray hides them and uses decorative outlets in the cabin. See if that is popped.

The cabin lighting is all 24v. The only items on the 12v side are the stereo, pohne, and dc plug. and they have breakers on the panels. The nav lights are 12v dc and work when the 12v Dc solenoids are engaged. Under the helm your will find the dc push button breakers for the helm systems, and in the ER you will find all the circuit breakers. But as said, if all the other nav lights work then it could be bulbs. Unless you have a pinched wire in the mast. They both are mounted on the stern mast with internal wiring.

Hey everyone thanks a bunch for all your help!

Have taken all your advice and dug a little deeper.

So, all the bulbs blew because they were 12v. Apparently I need 24v bulbs on the mast. Have ordered 12/24v compatible leds. Hopefully that solves that problem.

I've checked for more breakers hidden in cabinets but haven't found any more. I have however found that the TV in the fwd stateroom was unplugged in a crawl space behind the cabinet. This has got me thinking that the subwoofer/accoustimass must be unplugged somewhere also, but can't seem to find it behind any access panels (maybe there's a few hidden ones I'm missing?)

Rich, any ideas where I can try see how these Bose units are wired up?

Thanks again everyone, really appreciate it

Strecker - here's some pics for you :)

To check to home theater system is a PITA
1) you have to remove the door AND hinges that cover the entertainment system
2) then un screw the rack and the entire unit comes out with all the components attached. (use two people as it is heavy and someone needs to hold the system while you look at plugs. (note: the wire bundles are tight and leave very little woggles room.
3) up in the ceiling you will find access hatches that are velcro'd in place. carefully with a flat butter knife pry them loose. You will find wiring to speakers and and access to the wiper motors and wire runs to the helm.

Good luck. It's a great riding boat and is a dream on long trips.

Reach out to Rusty Higgins. He will get you an answer.

Brilliant, will get crack in this weekend. Thanks Rich!

Thanks BW, will do if I get stuck any further!

Cheers

Regarding the Bose wiring. I had pretty good access by hinging open the breaker panel. I could reach all the connections and trace the wires pretty well. Would recommend giving that a try before pulling the whole rack out. My concern with pulling the rack was that I'd accidentally pull cables off the backs of components and create a bigger mess.

Thanks Jason. Managed to check out all the connections. Still no go. Have given up and getting an electrician to try trace it back.
On another note though, do you find the 540 spits a lot of water back up on to the rear pad/seat? Particularly on the stbd side. I'm guessing is the exhaust port that is doing it? Wonder if there's a way to stop it. Even with no wind I'm finding that water is getting thrown up there pretty badly.

The water comes from spray due to the camper effect. The air swirls back towards the cockpit and cabin even though you are running at 20 knots into the wind. Make sure to keep your cabin door closed or your interior may start turning black...

Hi Humph, appreciate the feedback. This seems to be a bit different I think.

When underway, it looks the like the spray is actually coming directly from the side of the boat and into the rear pad rather than swirling up and back in.. She also splashes back wash when slowing down big time! Much more compared to the 44da I had prior.. Maybe it's the hill design? Just seeing if any other 540 owners had the same effects

Very odd, maybe you need a bigger boat! Try sending a PM to Rusty Higgins, he has run that model quite a bit.

I only notice water on the read pad in wind or chop and almost never on the rear seat. Are your auto trim tabs turned on?

There is a lot of spray that comes over the swim platform and into the dinghy if the cover is off but not really onto the rear pad.

Hmm that's really odd.. Yep auto trim tabs are on. What about when you come off the plane. Do you get wash coming up all over the transom?

It's not the port exhaust. you have Pod', so when running the exhaust goes through the prop hubs. The exhausts on the side of the boat are the low pressure (at idle) exhaust discharge. Once you throttle up it goes through the hubs. My 540Da is dry, I never see the rear sun pad wet. As far as water coming up when you slow down, almost all boats do that, and remember the 540Da is almost 60K wet and that is a lot of weight coming down off plane. Just reduce your speed slowly and you will reduce the volume of water coming over the swim platform.

Keep the auto trim tabs on the pods in the ON at all times. if you turn them off the boat will be sluggish and ride at a high angle. Do you have the auxiliary QL Trim tab system on your hull? (blade type tabs). My 540Da likes a lot tab to be efficient. I keep the pod auto tabs on and the blades set to show the second to last two lights on (blades down about 80%)
