boating with dogs

  • This is our second season with the boat and our first season having our puppy aboard. Prior to taking her out on the boat, I took her to the boat twice, maybe three times while I was doing minor work on the boat (installing LED's, and fixing the transom shower). That way she was used to being on the boat and comfortable with it prior to being exposed to the noise or vibration of the motors.
We have had her out during the day and at night and she is very happy on boat any time of day and just about any water conditions too.

Laci has been on the boat several times at the dock. No issues. Loves it. Takes a nap every time. Only taken her out a couple of times, about an hour each, slow and fast so she gets an idea of what it's like. Did ok. When running fast, she wears the mutt muffs which she's not too crazy about - yet. She will learn quickly that when running fast, she wears them. Also, once we get a dinghy and can go ashore and let her explore, think she will tolerate the boat ride better. And as long as she doesn't get wet. Yep, water is for drinking only (out of the fountain not her bowl though). Thanx all for sharing your stories and pictures!

Don't their nails scratch the cockpit, vinyl etc.? Would love to bring our dog......just got our first boat.

My dog did not walk on the seats often, but she never harmed them. The only down side is there was always hair everywhere, even in the engine compartment. If you have a dog, bring your dog. Life if better with a dog...

Yup. My 110lb German Sheppard never seemed to damage the vinyl, but we always kept his nails ground. Now as far as the hair is concerned that was an issue sometimes. We would sweep a lot and do our best to vacuum up the carpet. I decided at one point to go with hardwood in the cabin and the problem was easier after that. One thing to look out for on deck is the drain holes getting clogged. My dogs hair clogged the holes more than once and rain water or wash down ended up dripping into the engine room. Now we just check the drains and scuppers after each trip with the dog.

We are having that issue. We have a black lab and a golden Pomeranian. Needless to say we decided to get carpet that blended between the two in order to help the boat look cleaner.

Very sweet. I recognized the trees and knew it was Florida. Then I saw where you are from. Grew up there.
