Official 390 E.C. Thread

Actually the engines are Crusader's version of the GM 496 CID truck engine. Great power choice for the boat since they have much more torque at 3200 RPM than the 454 putting out 300 hp at the cruising sweet spot. Max RPM (rev limiter setting) on this version is 4600 but they made an HO version that will spin faster and has a higher cruise RPM. When I put the engines in 13 years ago the prop shop told me that the older AQ 19 shaft was marginal with the ZF 2 to 1 ratio transmissions. The engines are rated to turn as high as 3600 continuously and at that RPM 30 MPH is possible in calm water. I took the boat from Newport News up the Chesapeake Bay/Potomac River to the DC yacht club at this speed in summer of 2013. Eight hour run, approximately 250 miles without refueling.

I reached Sea Ray Customer Service and got the shaft length so now I can get started on the repairs.

Stay tuned......

Remember - BOAT stands for Break Out Another Thousand

Are you going to increase the diameter??? I would suggest to do so

I'm hoping to find out more about the failure when I get the boat out of the water on Monday. I will at the least go back with an AQ22 shaft instead of the 19.

Re: Something bad already happened....

Im New to the forum. Looking for info about the transfer switch re: my westerbeke gene. Its making power and volts to the transfer switch but un able to power the accessories of the boat. Wondered if anybody knows which post or terminals it needs to be connected to to route the power to my boat? Any help would be appreciated

Re: Something bad already happened....

I'm new here but have a major problem and I hope that someone here can point me in the right direction.

Yesterday I developed a vibration on the starboard side. I shut down and went over the side to investigate but found nothing amiss so I continued on my way at reduced speed. The vibration continued for another 1/2 hour when suddenly the shaft snapped just behind the strut. Having lost the prop we continued to limp home on one motor.

I need to know the dimensions of the shaft to have a replacement made.

Does anyone have this?
If you haven't gotten the info yet call General Propeller in Tampa Fl they make the shafts for the Searays. They cranked one out for me in 2 days and shipped it so I ordered it on Monday and had it by Friday. Talk to Robbie if he needs the numbers tell him to look mine up under Rich Randazzo 401 6880588

Re: Something bad already happened....

PS they can make your prop too and their prices are good

PPS I would recommend getting a new coupling which General prop will fit properly to the new shaft so you don't have to worry about fitting the old one.

Update;

The Leisure-lee is still up on stands in a back parking lot.
I have the shaft and Props. The strut, rudder and rudder housing are being cast by Buck Algonquin. When I get the bills I will list the casting numbers for future reference. I have Progressive and they have been pretty good to work with.
The transmission was pulled was a precaution and has only minor rebildable damage and should be back on next week. I am praying for the second week of July.
I added the trim tabs and eagerly await using those.

I just completed rewiring my 3-knobber AC control to shut off the blower whenever the thermostat is satisfied. Before, the blower ran 24/7 regardless of whether the compressor was running or not. Thanx goes out to Pietro for allowing me to use his modified wiring diagram to achieve this. It sure is a whole lot quieter when to blower is not constantly running. This was a very simple modification that only took 20 minutes to do.

I'm happy you finally did it, Ken!

Care to share how?

Did you get the new thermostat to shut off the sea water pump when the AC units cycle off?

IMHO: That would be a bad idea. Pumps lose prime. The first thing you should do after turning on the AC units is to check for cooling water coming out the side of the boat. If you were to do this there should be a safety circuit involved that checks for water flow and not allow the compressor to run if there is no cooling water.
