baby life jackets

I think you only need the neck flap when they are babies (infants). A one year old holds their head up on their own.

I still like the one with the strap through the leg though.

When our son was 4 weeks old, we borrowed one of the orange traditional jackets from our Sea Ray dealer. It was rated for kids 12-24lbs. Once he became mobile, we ended up with both a neoprene CG approved vest and the "puddle jumpers" for both kids. I have one of the Super Softs for a 25lb kid, but my daughter hated it. They both like the animal faces on the puddle jumpers so that's what they wear on the boat now.

how did the kids stay in the traditional orange vest as an infant?

nope.... it is not a question IF the child can holds its own head. It is a question that in a PANIC situation a child is "forced" by the life JACKET to keep its head above water - conscious or not. But leg strap is also a necessity - and zip AND straps.

should be talking weight anyway. This 1 year old is kind of tweener. looks like 30 pounds it the break point on the sterns page when moving from their infant to toddler jackets.

We bought this one for our 3 month old:

It is neoprene, allows great mobility as it is less bulky around arms, doesn't ride up under her chin, and is coast guard approved.

We got it somewhere else for cheaper, can't recall where though.

Check out Salus marine jackets. You'll have to order from Google and they are very expensive. We are on our second (due to out growing his size) for our son and are very happy with them. They are designed by sailors and do a good job of allowing for freedom of movement without being too uncomfortable or hot.

The coast guard politely informed me that my son (4 years old) still needed a jacket with the head flap last year. I had him in a jacket without the extra flap. They were nice about it. I went and picked up a new jacket before we went out again.

Jackets are for saving lives. Not looking cool and being comfortable or convenient. Know your local laws. Look them up online. You might be surprised, I was.

Thanks everybody great info! Learned alot. Im going to Order the salus jacket abd hopefully she likes it!

Head flap? I could see strap. I don't see a life jacket online that has a flap and appropriate flotation for a 4 year old (40-50lbs??)

Let me know what pricing you're getting online. They are available in stores here. If I can grab it cheaper I can ship it down to you.

He was so young he slept most of the time and we had him on the bench by the helm seat with one of us holding him. I can't seem to be able to post a pic so I'll email it to you If you'd like.

First I've seen a youth vest with a flap. Went to the Mustang site to see more. The website says "Designed for coastal and offshore boating activities." Is this something you big water guys must have in rough water?

I think if you are in the big pond (ie LI Sound / ocean) it is really the minimum but seeing how the great lakes can really get stirred up I think any large body of water needs to be respected. Most of what you are seeing (the floatation jackets) are meant for calm lakes / small bodies of water where you can be easily retrieved. If god forbid the child goes over you know the jacket is going to keep the head above water and you have this nice big handle on top to ease retrieval.

PS please keep up your efforts in global warming, it was damn cold this winter in the northeast

Well I just recieved my salus jacket in the mail. Took 3 weeks but well worth the wait. I put her in it as soon as I opened the box and what do ya know. No crying no fusing no restrictions. She was as comfortable as can be and she didn't even seem to realize it was on. The only time she noticed it is if she fell and had a tough time getting back on her feet. Thank you to everybody who helped out and a big thank you to whomever introduced me to the salus jacket

Our son thinks it's a treat to wear his "special" jacket. He loves being on the boat and really doesn't mind wearing his jacket. It's may be a different story when it gets really hot this summer but hopefully he adjusts.
