I'll start. They're very similar, yet have a lot of differences!

1. In the 410, the fwd stateroom has a door to the head and a pocket door from the salon (the 410 has a swing door in 2000 only). The water tank is under the bed, so there aren't drawers as there are in the 400. The head has a different layout and a smaller countertop to accommodate the 2nd door.
2. In the salon, the couch ends at the fwd bulkhead in the 410. The 400 has more of a U", which is nice for seating, but more awkward to convert to a bed.
3. The port fwd porthole in the 400 is fake (actually it's real, but is buried behind cabinetry.) The 410 has lower cabinetry so both portholes are visible.
4. In the 400, the water tank resides under the seating in the mid-cabin. The center pulls out and a filler cushion makes it a bed. In the 410, the bench seat extends as a bed, and a bunk can be unfolded from the aft bulkhead.
5. The 410 dash is a much rounded and consolidated design
6. The side arches are slimmer in the 410, and the side glass terminates at the base of the arch instead at the arch as it does on the 400.
6. The 410 has molded entry steps for each side of the cockpit and the transom door is much thinner and integrated into the gunwale when open.
7. The 410 has no full-width upper swim platform - the transom assy extends to the end of the hull.
8. The 410's swim platform is vented, and it SEEMS larger than the 400, but maybe someone else has measured?
9. The 410 came with strips along the cabin top and the thicker style boot stripes.

I forgot to mention this because I've slammed my head into the horizontal hatch so many times that my memory isn't what it should be.

I have a permanent scar on my bald head because of this 'ingenius' design which is the same on the 420. We now have a little stuffed crab hanging from the upper slider handle to catch my eye if I'm walking up the stairs and not looking up. Easier to do than you'd think.

If you look at overall dimensions, overall layout, weight, hull design, etc. the 400/410/420/44 are all pretty similar boats with what the automotive industry would call "mid-cycle facelifts." The only major differences between them is that the 420/44 offered factory hardtops, and the engine options changed over the years. They all differ in creature features and small layout changes, as well as technological advances as the years progressed. But in my humble opinion, I think you'll notice the differences are minor (unless you're comparing hardtops or pod drives). If you took a non-boater for a ride on a '98 400DA, then a 2000 410, then a 420/44; they probably wouldn't notice any difference other than cosmetics.

Isn't the 400 a single head layout whereas the 410 has a second head in the aft area of the saloon?

Nope - same layout. The 380DA had a single head, and that lineage became the 390DA, which was renamed the 40DA. The 400EC and the 410EC had single heads as well.

It's true that the 410EC has a single head, but oarwhat, the OP asked about the 2000's 410DA vs the 400DA. In that era, it looks like both the 410DA and the 400DA had a 2 head layout.

Guys thanks for all the detailed info!! I just got in from plowing I'll digest it all when I'm more awake. Thanks again

Ok couple more questions first what do you wack your head on?? I'll ask this in the forum also but 3116 vs 3126?? or a cummins 6CTA if you can find one? I'm a diesel guy and here all the horror stories. What do you guys think? I had 3208's and loved them. Thanks Randy

In post #3, I described how the 400DA had a swing-door and slider top for the companionway, while the 410DA has a pocket door. When Cop mentioned that he hits his head on his 420DA companionway slider top, I realized that I was thinking about the 380 instead of the 410, so I deleted it. The design makes it easy to hit your head, but I do appreciate the ability to open only the top, or only the bottom part of the door.

Your choice of boat will largely dictate which engine you get. Cummins weren't available in the 400 nor the 410 Dancer. Cummins WERE available in the EC: B's in the 400 and C's in the 410. The 3126 wasn't available in the 400DA.
