Sorry guys, I am new to this boat. Have twin 496 mags.
I just was reading the service manual. It say these engines require 9 quarts! (for each) Is this a typo????

What grade are you guys using? The dealer is suggesting blended. Suggestions?

Thanks!

asking what kind and grade oil is like asking ten different guys what they like best about a women

Tony,

Big step up, congrats. When did you sell your 280? Did you stay at Hawthorne after it became Brewer?

Yes, 9 quarts it is. I also found that the Mercruiser branded stuff works best. When we bought our 290 the PO had already done the oil service, his yard must have used whatever they had. That first season the 496 inhaled oil to the point I thought something might be wrong. I was topping off with good stuff, Castrol. Then we found the fellow who has taken care of the engine since and he insisted on using the Merc brand. Since then I have not had to put any oil in during the season.

Hi Henry,
Good to hear from you! Yes, sold / traded the 280 to Russo marine (crooks) 2 weeks ago for the 350. My fiancée loves to entertain and we did a lot of overnights this year. Thus, she suggested a larger boat. I easily went along with that! ;>
I had 4.3 on my 280, 4qts and done. Could not believe I read 9 qts on these engines!
I left Brewers 1 year after they took over as many did. At Glover Warf in Beverly now. Still remember you helping me when I got the 280. Really appreciated that!

I just purchased amsoil synthetic since mercury stoped making it. My 18 quarts was delivered yesterday.

yes, 9 each and I used Merc. 25W40. I usually bought the oil online to get a best price.

Note: this is a 5qt jug.

Sadly, I've never gotten 9 quarts out.
