Engines
5.7L gm
I have a dropping level in my square gear lube reservoir with no external leakage. I assume the 54 inch lube hose to the dribble valve at the transom has developed a leak. Anyone with this trouble. I will check my hose tomorrow. I see no external lose at the outdrive.

If the reservoir level is dropping obviously you are loosing fluid somewhere.....if you do not see any fluid in the bilge you must be leaking it externally.....

Its definitely inside the boat because of residue i can see under the engine. The bottle seems to leak a little because of traces around the mounting bracket and behind the rubber strap. Don't know how much vibration it takes to slosh around. The rubber hose goes out from the bottle fitting over the starboard side of the engine into the back where i cannot see or reach without taking out the barricade to that area. The hose seems to be in good shape at the bottle fitting and the leakage around the bottle is much less than the loss of fluid indicates. So it has to be one of the couplings in the back area. Thought it was going to rain today plus the heat drove me back into the house. Have found illustrations showing how it all connects through the transom to the outdrive. This engine is a 5.7L EFI/TBI w/Alpha One/Gen II configuration, '00 210 BR. Newly acquired last Fall, a few things to left to do, much bigger and heavier than my old 18' 3" Arrowglass BR w/7.5 beam. Have the round extended platform on back over the outdrive. Nice feature.

Look at the top of the cap on the bottle.

There is a little rubber "whip" on the cap - to let air in. But the whip can leak in time - spitting out oil. Then there will be oil on the top part of the cap - and it will drip everywhere around the bottle.

That would be the most likely if you have oil stains on/around the bottle.

If you then have a slight leak somewhere else as well - you will see foam on the top of the oil in the bottle after running it for a while. That will make the leak - leak even more as the bubbles will force more oil out.

So first fix - replace bottle cap if there is oil on the top of it.

It is rare for the hose to leak. But sometimes the gearbox can leak oil out as well. But that is a bigger job - and not something I have seen often - but then usually it will leak a LOT (empty bottle in 1 hour - and bilge very blueish black with oil)

I had the same issue a couple years ago. Slow drop of res bottle, grease in bilge. Granted this was a BIII, but technology is similar.

Check the bottle by placing a folded clean paper towel under the bottle. If this does not become oil soaked after the boat is used a couple times, it's not the bottle. Also check where the line attaches to the transom. If no oil there problem gets more serious.

If the above does not turn up a leak, it's time to pull the drive. You need to check the bellows for oil. If there is oil there, the problem is a worn leaking drive shaft seal on the upper unit.
