What were they thinking in the design phase of my boat?

So today Charlene and I cleaned out the cabin. For the first time. I never went thru it all as thoroughly as we just did. I filled it with stuff during the move here to Wisconsin. So now everything came out. I got many questions answered but a few more surprises came up. I didn't know we have an anchor locker. But now that I found it and very old rope. How do you put it all away and not get the bed wet? Here's what we found.

The square checkerboard hatch is an access panel and the anchor hatch is below that. It is the rectangular shaped checkerboard pie e that comes up.

This is what is behind the square checkerboard.

The steel bar goes straight up and down.

This is looking down to where it attaches to the hull.

And this is looking up to where it goes thru the top of the boat.

This is what it attaches to. The all thread twists just a little with this odd shaped cleat.

The bottom attach point does NOT appear to be where the bow eye goes inside. The bow eye is about a foot lower. The previous owner had the "bitter end" of the anchor line tied to that steel rod. So still I sit a bit confused as to the function of all this and it's designed use.

Still functions as we discussed above. The all thread makes the bow cleat (bollard) stronger since it ties it into the keel - which is just about the strongest part of the boat. Since you don't have deck access to the anchor locker (even newer boats than yours are designed this way - although deck access is certainly superior), the idea is to pass the anchor up through the deck hatch. The bitter end stays attached down below as a precaution - so you don't accidentally lose the whole anchor and line overboard. Obviously you won't rely on this fastening point for securing the anchor - it's just a back up. Yup - you might get things a little wet when you retrieve the anchor.

If it were mine, I'd probably install a hawse pipe and permanently secure (store) the anchor on the deck or the rail.

Thank you. I can see how the all - thread will make it stronger and be less likely of ripping a cleat off of the boat. We appreciate your help.

To. jitts3, I am too old to go forward to tend the anchor on my 1981 260 Da. I installed a windlass and all my problems with anchoring and retrieveing have been solved.
Regard, Time Off

We have a walk through windshield and I have a windless...best feature on the whole boat!!!
