Late 90's 270 Sundancer Thread

This is our first season with our 270 and all 3 Interstate batteries (4 years old) were independently load checked and found to be OK. I highly recommend Interstate brand, our previous boats Interstate batteries lasted 7 seasons! We trailer our 270 and I usually plug in shore power a day ahead of launching and have no trouble.

Hey Guys I'm looking for some info here. Went to the dock today after work to check on the boat. Found both batteries so low they would not start the engine. I had battery 1 last month not maintaining charge well so I know its probable week. I have Dynathrust 27DC5 batteries that are 4 1/2 years old. I have only had this boat for a year. What is the normal life of a battery? What battery do you use or recommend? And do you leave your batteries on charge all the time when on shore power at the dock?

I use Sears diehard platinum batteries. They are AGM batteries made by Odessy but cost less than he Odessy brand name. The big advantage of an AGM battery is no maintenance to fill water levels but you pay since AGM are more expensive than flooded wet cell.

Over 4 years for a flooded wet cell battery is pretty good. I would replace both batteries at the same time.

I leave the batteries charging all the time if attached to shore power. The charger has a float mode that will not overcharge them.

I too bought two new Sears 31M batteries. Each weighs 75 pounds and have a great looking set of numbers even compared to the 34M model. With the 3 year replacement warranty and being Sears where I can locate a store anywhere, seemed like the best deal to me. They ARE expensive, no doubt about it, but this is what I chose after a lot of looking.

My boat spends a lot of time in dry storage, no charging when in storage, so a good battery was very important to me.

I plug shore power in and charge all the time when at the dock.

I just ordered the soft sided 48 Pack Carbon Cooler: 1 Options: Bag Color:Silver, Embroidery Color:Black Thread embroidery Text: King Ron Item Total: $115.90.

I will give you all an update.

Also going to install new Bluetooth stereo, with wired remote, amp and all the new wiring. Looking forward to lots of time on the water....

Howdy everyone. I'm looking to get ready for a little end of the year maintenance and had some questions that someone on here might just know off of the top of their head.

I need to tune the engine up and was wondering what plugs/cap/rotor and wires were good. I have the 7.4 MPI Mercruiser. I looked on Iboats.com to see if I could find a tune up kit or the like, but could not find anything. Any guidance would be helpful.

Same story with the Impeller, does anyone have a specific model number or the like to ease ordering same?

I am going to change the engine oil and outdrive oil and do have the manuals for both of those, so I was planning on just going by the book, unless anyone has had better luck with anything else. Engine has 475 hours and stays in the water. I'm also not a speed junky but rather am shooting for long term reliability.

My last question is going to sound stupid, but where is the air filter on this engine? And if so, any recommendations on air filter.

Sorry I don't have specific part numbers. There is not a "kit" that I know of. You have to put it together yourself. Not a big deal. You can try googling "Sierra" parts for the 7.4. That will probably get you cross reference #'s to Mercruiser part #'s. Use the West Marine catalog as a source for numbers. This will work for the engine and impeller.
There is no "air cleaner" per se. There is a spark arrestor. Rectangular thing on top and toward the left front of the engine as you look at it. These can be taken off and cleaned using carb cleaner, hot soapy water, etc. Do not put it back on until completely dry either with air or in the sun.

I found a website called Boats.net. You just put your engine serial # in and you can click/pull all of the necessary parts in minutes. The prices were reasonable too. Pretty simple.

Man, what a difference the tune-up and bottom job did. The boat is faster now than I though it would be. I could barely get 3500 RPM before, and now I top out at almost 45mph at 4500 RPM (according to the now functional speedo). I was a little skeptical of the performance of this boat when I bought it, but I am pretty sold now. Comfortable 32-ish mph cruising is all I need. Now, I am just wishing I had done the tune-up earlier.

Does anyone have any idea where the CO detector is on a '98? The boat is new to me as of October, I was on the boat this afternoon checking it before the next big freeze (I am so glad I used -50 antifreeze AND have an Xtreme Heater) and one thing I really attempted to find was the CO detector. I want to make sure it is operational or replaced for the coming season. Obviously, if I can't find it, I can't test it. Thanks.

On my 2000 It was mounted on the forward closet wall. If it's there it's going to be in plain sight. Also if it is original I wouldn't trust it. They should be replaced every 5 years I think. I'd get a new one just to be safe even if you find it.

For whatever reason mine never had one installed. The hard wired marine grade are expensive, near $100, but I thought it worth it. If you have a generator I would recommend adding a pair of Kiddie battery powered with digital read out to use at night in both sleeping areas and move one to the helm for day use.

I absolutely agree that $100 versus death is more than a fair trade off. My issue is since I cant find the thing, I can't see if it has been replaced. My real concern is that it started its beeping of death (when it is time to replace it) and it was simply removed and not replaced. If that is the case, I want to know where the hard wiring is so I can tap off of that.

I also checked the Owner's Manual, but that wasn't a ton of help, and it actually made things more curious. In the wiring schematics, it seems to indicate 2 CO detectors. However, in the location diagram, I can only find one labelled V-berth CO detector. This shows as located somewhere around the forward hanging locker, but I definitely looked there, and found nothing.

I am wondering if the detector was moved, and the wiring hidden behind the bolster up there. I think I will have to worm into the harness itself to find the correct wire numbers from the schematics.

5 years was my understanding as well. When you say "on the forward closet wall" do you mean in the v-berth? That is where the Owner's manual shows the wiring coming out, though they don't actually show the placement of the unit. I am thinking my boat either had it removed or it was never installed.

I have two CO detectors one in v-birth just forward of closet and on in mid-birth aft port corner. Both unit are wired in.

Same as above on my 1999 270DA.

Be careful some of the replies to your question may come from owners with the 270SE model, which is a very different layout and has a bow pulpit.

Jay is correct in pointing out that some if us have a different model. My point was that mine never had one and even Sea Ray folks are puzzled as to why not.

And mine only had 1. And yes it was mounted on the closet wall next to the HVAC controller on the dinette side.

Well, mine is definitely not there, but now I have a good idea where to look for the wiring harness for it. The goes another $125 and a few hours trying to hook it up. Gotta love boats!

I also like Mike's idea of a second portable one for the cockpit while underway. That would seem to be an undeserved area if you have the canvas up, or if the wind is blowing the wrong way.

Thanks for all of the help, folks!
