Hey guys,
Looking to replace my salon carpet in a 40 Sedan bridge. I have seen some posts, but was searching for some additional information.

1. Assuming I stay with carpet, any idea on pricing and a potential source. Carpet has a foam pad integrated with a bound edge.

2. Assuming I go wood, I see lumber liquidators has a wide range of products, I also found marine plywood flooring, real expensive. Once again looking for any ideas, feedback from projects already done?

Thanks,
Pat

Pat,

When installing wood in my boat, I was cautioned that you have to be careful due to the flexing of the boat and extreme temperature fluxuations ( I see you live in MA). Many of the suppliers would not honor thier warrenties if thier product was used on a boat. I would find out what Sea Ray is putting on thiers and try to find the same brand and installed the same way.

Good LUck

I plan to redo my salon flooring next year, I hope. Do the cockpit and swim platform this year. Back to the salon. Try PlasTeak or Plasdeck. Same company to product lines. I will probably use the Plasteak next year for the salon. Not sure if it is what you are looking for but take a look.

I just got a price from a gent in Kingston ma to do Amtico. It is the same stuff all the boat builders are now using. I selected a teak and holley laminate that runs $10 sq/ft un-installed. He will install and rip out carpet as well. you will need to call for price, very experienced. let me know if you want his info. if you search amtico you will find some posts so you know what it looks like. Be sure your carpet installer comes to and looks at the boat in person. Sea Ray wraps a lot of trim in carpeting and every piece is going to have to come off, stripped and recovered. Every hatch has carpet run over the edge and sealed underneath......the carpet guy cannot just fold under and staple. A lot of carpet salesmen just measure the yardage and quote 2X the labor and that usually doesn't cover the work needed on a Sea Ray.

As far as wood goes, this isn't the place to go cheap. Use marine grade flooring, even though the floor guy says his product can be installed below grade. The other thing to consider on wood flooring in a Sea Ray is that the deck to which you apply the wood has to be perfectly straight and level, and it usually isn't on a production boat designed for carpeted interiors. Most experienced guys will lay a "subfloor" out of marine plywood and then install the wood flooring. The added plywood and wood flooring is going to raise the level of the deck, so you most likely will have to remove and reset all under cabinet appliances and the refrigerator. There is a lot of work in doing this right............

I love the look of wood in main salon areas of boats, however prefer the feel of carpet in the staterooms.

I had considered doing wood flooring in my main salon, however with all the hatches that are able to be opened to open up the engine room it wouldn't look right and would be 2X the amount of work to frame them out correctly and fit properly.

As Frank stated it does take a lot of work to get right. Everything tapers to the bow and makes for some interesting cuts and layout work. I could not be happier with how mine came out. I used Lumber liquidators for my lumber because it was prefinished and sealed wood.
Here's a link to my boat and the way I did my floor.

Frank is also correct in that carpeting a boat is not a simple task. I just completed my carpet job. Looks great but took me three weeks hitting it full time. Most DIY guys can carpet a boat as long as they take their time and use some common since. Carpeting also allows you greater flexibility in patterns and color selections. Aother tip; once you start taking the old carpet up you are pretty much committed to the task. No going back to relay the old carpet. Sea Ray used one heck of a lot of glue when they laid their carpets. All that glue shrinks the old carpet significantly as is cut way from the deck. Keep that in mind if you are planning to use the old carpet as a template.

Jason,
When you say you used Lumber Liquidators did you use their Bellawood - solid hardwood?

If you are not 100% sure on wood, there is a product called Allure available at HD and Lowes. It is a high end vinyl that looks exactly like wood. It comes in many finishes. It is a floating installation and a simple DIY. One "plank" joins to the next via peel and stick strip like on a self sealing envelope....but on steroids.

I don't know how big the salon is on a 40' sedan but as a comparison, I could do Saint Max for under $200.

Hi Guy's & Gal's- This is my first post on Club SeaRay!

I own a 2003 380 Sundancer. My good friend Curt Page at West Coast Canvas in Lodi, CA completely gutted my flooring and installed Teakeflex material, he also trimmed the hatches with real teak. It's Awesome!! I also inserted a glass bowl into the existing sink and updated the fixture before & after pictures are below

And the floor... I just bought my 440 express bridge and the biggest thing i dont like in the salon is the carpet.
