1988 268 Sundancer

I guess you would need to go to Vegas to buy a wench...LOL.

My trailer is a roller type and I need to crank her a long ways to get the boat centered. Therefore I love my electric WINCH.

If you get the king of trailers like Just Me, then a couple turns with a hand "wench" and you are all set:grin:.

WOW she is in beautiful shape. You must be proud of her! It brings back memories, growing up my dad had an 88 268 dancer with the single big block.

I cant remember if he changed from the 1:32 to the 1.47. I do know for a fact, he was running a 16X16 on an alpha 1, and the boat did AWESOME!!!! he tried about 10 different props, and that was the best he had ever come across. Top end, 43mph@ 4200rpm. it would JUMP up out of the hole with no issues with the 16x16 in about 5 or 6 seconds, with full fuel, full water and 4 passengers.

He tried the prop after blowing up a drive (hit a submerged object) him and the service manager spent all weekend one year trying every prop they had in the shop. no one could believe that it ran the 16X16 successfully. I think the fuel guy was getting pissed at them, every 2 hours in for fuel to check short term numbers.

Hello fellow Sea Ray 268 owners. I have a question for everyone! I have a 1988 Sea Ray Sundancer 268 454 7.4. I had the engine and out drive rebuilt at the last winter. I have had the boat for 8 yrs and never had a problem. I just thought it would be a good maintenance move! The problem that I am having is the oil pressure is running extremely high! I don't remember the exact numbers since the boat has been in storage for several months. When I run the engine a full load in water for about 15 min. The engine blows oil (not sure from where yet) and lose power. It will then come back up to speed and power. I think that the company that rebuilt the engine put the wrong oil pan back on the boat. I searched and searched for information about the oil pain and could not find any.

So my question is if any with the 454 7.4 engine could measure their oil pan from the block to the bottom of the pan. This would tell me if I have a deep enough pan. The second question is if I have the wrong pan can I run the engine with less oil to reduce oil pressure? I think it takes 7 qts what if run 5 or 6 qts? Do I risk ruining the engine? I want to avoid the need to have to fight with the shop to have the engine pulled and replace the pan, but I will do what I need to.

Any feedback will be helpful. THANKS!

High oil pressure does not equate to pan size or amount of oil generally speaking. I'm thinking you may either have the wrong oil pump or something is plugged somewhere. Engine oil pressure is a factor of bearing clearances and oil pump. If you are blowing oil out a seal, then I'm thinking you may have an oil passage blocked somewhere, but I can't imagine that this is the fault of the pan.

I'll measure my pan for you when I get home tonight. If I were to guess, she's about 8-9 inches deep. I get about 40-42 PSI oil pressure cold at high idle and 35-38 hot at idle. Also, my engine only takes about 5 quarts of oil.

Do you have a remote oil filter? If so, are you getting dirty oil into the filter? I wonder if that is not hooked up right or something....

Did you possibly over fill with oil?

I fill the oil filter, then put 4 quarts in the engine and fire it up until I build pressure. Shut it down and check the oil level. She usually takes another 1/2 quart or so.

If you put 7 quarts in, you may have grossly overfilled it.

Interesting that you say that the oil capacity is 5 qts. I am pretty sure the shop said they put 7 qts in and I questioned that number because I thought is was 5 qts. I do have a remote oil filter and I think that when the oil comes out of the engine it comes from the area in the back where the remote hook is located. I wonder if I have a bad hook up or the wrong one all together.

My boat is still in storage so I cant check the oil filter till the weather turns here in Michigan. I appreciate the feedback I believe that I have a 9 inch oil pan.

In the spring things to do:
1) Pull oil and refill with 5 qts =/new filter
2) Check filter for dirty oil

If there is a plug someplace in the oil system will a flush help? Or is something else I can do?

Thanks for the help.

Not sure on if it were plugged what you could do. I'm doubting that she's plugged. If all else fails, you may need to take it back to them for a tear down.

I'm thinking you may just have too much oil. Let's hope for that.

With too muchoil in the pan the crank is sitting in oil and when you run it hard like to geton plane the out will be churned up and that would cause the oil to foam whichwould cause the oil to atomize and mist out and with the crank running in oilyou would lose a lot of power. Call your local Sea Ray dealer service dept. and ask them how much oil you should be putting in.

The more that I read I am not sure if there is to much oil which is a easy fix. But the fact the engine blows oil near the remote oil filter. I am starting to think that something is not installed correctly. I did check the oil pressure mechanically to make sure it was not a bad gauge and it is not the gauge mechanical reading is the same as the gouge. Like I said I will start with the oil fill level and checking the assembly of the remote oil filter. Maybe there is a plugged filter there or by pass. I will let you know what I find. Thanks for the feedback. I just have to wait for the winter to pass in Michigan!

I just have to wait for the winter to pass in Michigan!

Good luck with that! I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for some soft water...LOL.

Looks really nice for Saturday. High of 47 and sunny...whoohooo! I might just splash the ole girl and take a run up and down the Saginaw River.

If the wrong pan was put on then it might not have the right baffels in it do when you take off the oil is sloshing back and as long as it takes these boats to get on plane the oil is getting wipped up by the crank. also check for loose oil lines and leaking valve covers.

How did you get your helm to look this good?

Say where did you get your new Sea Ray Decal?. I have a 87 and have been looking around to find some.

Hey Just Me, this is Del from Vermont who you got the boat from. Let me start by saying it looks amazing and you do incredible work, congratulations on the nicest 268 I have ever seen. We are now getting back into boating, staying in my favorite Sea Ray years (87 to 95) with a 1992 Sea Ray 330 Express Cruiser. But I am thinking that maybe you should come up to Vermont and help me make this one as amazing as yours. LOL

Anyways, glad to see you did not sell and that you made it through the truck fire unharmed. Have a great summer!
