Deka Batteries

I had two Deka group 31 deep cycle marine batteries that were only on their second season give up the ghost within a month of each other just this summer. The dealer replaced the first one on the advise of the regional rep. but they refuse to do anything about the other bat. I replaced with Interstates. Both bats that went bad were on a maintainer and always kept topped with distilled water. I for one won't be putting any more Deka bats into any of my equipment again.

My dealer wanted $110 for Deka batteries. The $212 is way too high.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to call the only distributor within 100 miles of me tomorrow morning and get the retail prices for these batteries.

Hope you all had a great weekend!!

This just in folks....called East Bay Manufacturing on these.

As a retail customer, If I went there myself the DP27s would cost me $122.14. The DC27? $139.72.

Called my marina. They called back saying they made a mistake. All five batteries should have been DPs vs the one DC. They will be removing the DC and installing another DP. And the correct price? $171.95 ! Better but not good enough.

Told her to go back to the manager yet again as I refuse to pay 40% more than the retail cost. Now if they want to mark up their wholesale price by 40% that might work.

No word back yet!!

This reminds me of the time I ordered a toilet from our marina store.

It came in and I asked Ron how much do i owe ya.

Ron, $279

Me, What ?? I thought Debbie said $129.

Ron, Oh no.

Me, I'll sh*t in the lake before I pay that for a toilet.

Ron, OK you little bastard lets go to the office and look at the invoice.

Me, OK

Ron, Debbie come here and bring Wayne's invoice for the toilet.

Debbie, Why ?? Its $129

Ron, That can't be !!

Debbie, Come here and look at the invoice.

Ron, I'm sorry I thought you ordered the other toilet. :wow:

.Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

That's a great story...thanks for the mid-afternoon laugh!! I can't wait to hear from the idiots who run my marina!!

Stay tuned!!

One word, OPTIMA's!!!

I respectfully disagree :) I think they are not worth a dime - at least in hot areas. I had them on my previous sail boat - and they lasted 1 season and a bit - just enough to be out of warranty.

I like Lifeline AGMs much better. Or Rolls. The lifeline pro rated 5 year warranty is great.

My "new to me" 310DA has 4 x OPTIMA's and it is in my budget they need replacement within a year.

I just went 5 years on 4 of my 5 my Kirkland/Costco wet cell batteries. I replaced 1 last year after 4 years.

just as a FYI :) - when you replace batteries - replace ALL batteries that CAN be in the same circuit. Else you can create a situation where your new battery will get "killed" by the old batteries very fast since it will take the "grunt" of the workload.

... it will take the "grunt" of the workload.

When I bought my used boat in 2006, it had 5 Deka AGM batteries. I believe they were put in in 2005 by the PO (SeaGull). In 2010 the house bank wouldn't hold charge and I had to constantly use the emergency start switch to start my port motor. I probably could have just changed out the 2 Dekas on the port side, but Autozone was offering deal on Optima Blue Tops: buy 4 get 1 free with free shipping to my front door. So, in the spring of 2010 I bought 5 new group 31 Optima Blue tops. This is the third season on them and they have so far shown no sign of weakening.

This is where Gary usually says " Your boat won't start this weekend" so there, I figure I'll beat him to the punch.

For some odd reason, my boat came from the factory with only two 24 group starter batteries, no house battery. For obvious reasons I had nothing but trouble with that set-up so this year I changed to group 31 Duracell AGM deep-cycle batteries from Sam's at $163 each. Haven't had one problem while on hook and with 1000 MCA no issues starting the motors.

You guys must be tough on batteries! My 270 came with two Walmart/Exide G27 batteries (one starting and one deep cycle) and just had them both load tested.....good! They are both 2005 and working great, Mike.

The warmer the climate - the more issues you have in general with batteries.

Another update:

The gal who writes up service at my marina just called me back. The manager, who is a complete A hole, said I can pay them to remove the batteries, buy them myself, and then pay them to reinstall!!!

Now you think he might have mentioned, when he first called me to let me know they were replacing all five batteries, that I could buy them cheaper and they would install them!! If he would have offered that I would have gladly done it!

So, I have a long winded email into the owner who isn't back until Thursday. She's usually great to work with...hoping we can come to a mutually agreeable resolution! You would think tha A hole of a manager wouldn't be such an A hole with the marina having over a ten percent vacancy rate!!

Stay tuned for more!!

I'd be careful with causing too much of a stink.

They might put you on their a$$hole/crybaby list. Then try to get work done on your boat :wow:
