Within the next week or two I am going to do my first impeller change on these diesel engines. I've done many changes on other smaller engines before so I understand the process, my question is do I need a specific puller tool to get the old one out, or can it be pulled out with pliers etc like the smaller ones?

I bought a bolt from cat (sure you could get it cheaper elsewhere) It's a breeze with this bolt, pita without it

This one is hard to answer because the 3208's could have one of 5 different seawater pumps on them. The most common way to remove the impeller is with a 2" long 3/4X16 bolt..........the cover is removed, the bilt is inserted in the end of the impeller and is tightened. It contacts the end of the pump shaft and jacks the impeller out of the housing. Remove the key, clean the pump cover, install the new impeller (use soap or silicone for lube) with key and push it into place, then put the new o-ring gasket on the cover and reinstall it. It is about a 10 minute job, if there are no worn parts, no broken impeller blades (in which case you have to back-flush the system to recover any impeller parts in the cooling system) no leaks, and if you can get to it.

Alex is right on I bought the bolt from home depo. Had less bells and whistles. I hope you can use the bolt makes it simple
