420/44 DB Owners Club

I like 1000 RPM - 8.2Kts @ 3.9 GPH. (2.41 MPG - statute)

Sometimes we go 1100 RPM - 8.9 Kts at 5.0 GPH. (2.04 MPG)

At 1200 it really seems to start pushing a lot of water (1.64 MPG) and economy falls rapidly from there on up.

Thought I would post a little testing data on impellers. My boat was built late 2007 ( 2008 model ). I now have 300 hours on the qsm 500 so I decided to service the impellers. Now keep in mind since I bought it new the temp rises and remains the same during warm up and running on both engines. I changed just the starboard impeller. The one I pulled out looked good but had a good amount of memory built up and rubber was in great shape. So, I pulled it out and replaced with a new one. Started both engine and the starboard ran 6 degrees cooler during warm up and running. How about that. Keep in mind the old one looked pretty good and I felt like it would run through 500 hours.

That's my logic of thinking as well. Especially with the cost of a diesel engine, I don't think I would take that risk. Just my opinion though.

Re: 420/44 DB Owners Club Onan

how often do you replace the resonator intake part 140-3078-01 on a 2008 MDKBM Onan Generator. Can not find any hour requirements at Onan

Well, it depends on how you use your yacht and what types of water.
That is the point.

Update on subject of pulling the tran filters. Tool was found at napa to get them out. Put a small pan under the filter to catch the oil, worked great. Did have small amount of metal filings on mag on the end of the plug. Filters cleaned no issue. Hardest part was finding the socket and breaker that would fit

I am noticing the condensation drip pans under each air conditioner are rusting. I was wondering what any other owners have done to get this under control. It is a matter of time before the pans rust through. With regard to the salon air conditioner, there is no obvious or logical way to remove it. It looks like the entertainment center was constructed after the air conditioner was installed. Any trade secrets on how you get this salon unit out?

Have any of you changed the tabs? If so to what size? Did you stay with the single actuator? Was the change very beneficial? I have a Sea Lift Platform and added some batteries so a little help getting on plane would be helpful. Thanks for the input.

Read entire thread and answered a few questions for myself. Good info here but answer to one of my questions eludes me. Has anyone a trick for changing holding tank filter? Located on port side just above tank. I'm not a big guy but I still can't reach it, even after crawling back into integrated swim platform and then moving forward along port side around exhaust. Gets scary and I worry about getting stuck in there. No odor problem. Just being proactive. Crazy location to put the thing. There's got to be an easier way. I've changed others and they've been a breeze. This issue is specific to filter location on 2005 420 DB. Anyone?

I have found the only way I can reach it is to remove the hatch cover channel drain hose, wedge my left shoulder over the port exhaust tube and reach for the filter ends with my left hand only and do it by feel. It's quite a stretch but I get it done this way usualy in about 10 minutes. Not fun but it works for me. I agree, this is a poor location for the filter. Sea Ray could have made this more accessible.

Thanks Brian. At 5'8" I don't have a long reach. My shoulders can't clear exhaust enough either. Will check out your suggestion tomorrow. Maybe I'm missing something obvious. Otherwise I'm going to need a mechanically inclined 4th grader to do this for me.

Do you guys recall what's the transom zinc part number when ordering from boatzincs.com?

I use a pair of locking vise grip pliers with the jaws adjusted to the size of the most forward nut (that the filter screws into). Once I lock the vise grips on the forward nut, I loosen the act nut / hose easily. When I turn the aft nut, the entire filter will rotate until the vise prevents it from turning, then the aft nut comes off. Then I rotatae the enite filter from the forward nut which does not move because the of the vise grips. Install a new filter in the opposite manner. BTW I got tired of spending $104.00 every year for a tube of granulated charcoal. I found a guy on ebay that sold a kit where you use your used filter and recharge it with charcoal. His kit costs $19.99 plus shipping. Once you have the kit it will cost about $5.00 for granulated charcoal to recharge in the future. Check it out: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...+Filter+RECHARGE+KIT+for+marine+holding+tanks
